Have people become too sensitive? Why is this? Why must society conform to the offended?

Will the people who claim to be offendend reciprocate if another person finds something they do to be offensive, or will they be offended that they have to conform to another persons wants?

Here is an example of what I am talking about. The story ran in the Cleveland Plain Dealer

http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/news/1205829159187280.xml&coll=2

I have known four people very close to me and my family that have committed suicide, but the name of a hot wing sauce is not offensive.

  1. Peopl have not become too sensitive... our society has gotten desensitized and it now points out people who agree with the way the world used to be and says hey they got sensitive... no others lost their sensitivity.

  2. What are they getting sensitive about?

  3. Businesses are in business to make money.

They make less money when their potential customers are grieved every time they come to the establishment.

So, to not drive customers away, they're changing the name of their sause.

I can understand why many who've dealt with suicide would feel a jolt of horror at seeing the word tossed around casually, when they just walked in to get something to eat.

There's nothing wrong with a little human sensitivity.

But notice, it's not a government edict -- they have been told that they're putting people off, and they don't want to alienate potential customers. It's economic.

  4. Some people are overly sensitive others can be too inconsiderate. Just use your own discretion. The word "suicide" is a neutral word, no one should take offense to that word unless it was directed at that person in a negative context. But the word by itself is neutral and in the context of a hot sauce I don't see how this should be offensive. So the person in the article you posted is definitely over reacting, but this does not mean society has become too sensitive. Even if it has, there shouldn't be irrational reactionary responses of inconsiderate and disrespectful speech.

  5. because history has always conformed to the offender, and the pendulum is swinging..

  6. I think people just pretend to be sensative or just plain dumb for that matter.  Why?  You can sue people for ANYTHING.  Even your own stupidity.  Point in case, lawsuit about coffee being hot.  Think about all the commercials with "do not attempt" or something along those lines.  This is the same thing.  I find your language to be offensive and I will use it in court to either justify something wrong I did or get money from you.

  7. I'm almost certain that the complaints were from middle-upper class white Americans, as is always the case when things become politically incorrect.
