Hello. I need your help. My high school GPA is a 4.0 on a 4.2 scale. However, I've taken two community college classes as a 10th grader.

I just checked my unofficial transcript, and my grades are horrible!

In the summer I made a stupid decision of taking Biology. What I did not know is that Biology was specifically for students who have taken AP Biology before. I had NO KNOWLEDGE about Biology, and we were cramming all the info in 6 weeks. So, I dropped the class late and got a "W".

Now, this spring I took Mexican Art History and got a "C".

This is what it looks like:

Biology- W

Mexican Art History- C "CSU and UC approved"

What would you do if you were me? Would you authorize this transcrpit? If I don't authorize it, COLLEGES WON'T SEE IT.

My plan is to attend another community college while in high school.

CAN I GET RID OF "W" AND KEEP THE "C"?

  1. You can't get rid of the W and keep the C. It's either both or none.

One W on your transcript won't look bad... they'll be impressed that you tried to take college classes in grade 10 in the first place, and they'll just see that you maybe weren't ready for the academic demands of that class - that doesn't say anything extremely negative about you, unless you have a lot of them. What will probably interest them most of all, is your performance in the classes that you take after, because it reflects your ability to be adaptive and learn from mistakes.

There's no harm if they see it, but I personally probably wouldn't authorize it, especially if you plan to attend another school. A 'C' isn't that fantastic, anyway, so no loss.  You'll probably do better in the classes that follow and you may not want the C on the transcript at that point.

  2. A W is not bad...its just withdrawl and you would rather do that then get a D or F. As long as you have four (I believe) and under of the W's you will be ok if another college sees it. Plus if you are going to a CC it does not really matter. You are showing initiative to better yourself when your still in HS. Good luck I hope this helps!

  3. Unless you are planning in majoring in Mexican Art History, no big deal. A C at my high school was above "college recommending grade". The reputation of your HS and your grades on SATs and entrance exams are much more important.

  4. I definitely think that you should not authorize it.  What if you decide to go to an Ivy League school?  They are bombarded with the applications of excellent students.  You do not want this to give them an easy way of weeding you out of the stack.

Your high school GPA is excellent and you do not want the 'C' to be possibly factored in.  The high school officials may overlook the 'C', but they COULD use it as a tie-breaker for rank.  You do not want the 'C' to bring your GPA down.
