Have the TV companies changed the size of the pictures they broadcast?

I've got a 42" plasma and the picture used to fit the screen perfectly, now there is a 2" bar at the top and bottom of the screen. I've tried changing the picture size on the tv, but it's still not right, any ideas?

If your telly's widescreen (Which I assume it is), terrestrial TV in the UK is transmitted at a hybrid ratio which isn't a perfect fit for either a 4:3 or16:9 screen. You will get gaps at the edges. If it's via Sky, you can set the picture aspect ratio in the setup menu for the box.
