  1. Depends who you ask. I'm sure our Indigenous people would have some very interesting answers....

  2. Do you live in Australia?  If you did, you'd be more likely to have a point of view.

I don't live there, but have read much.  Whether things are better or not depends on whether you are European, or Aborigine.  The natives that live in Austrailia, may wish that Europeans never arrived, some may feel their world has been turned upside down.

If you are a modernist, then you can judge improvements in Austrailia by general improvements in the whole world, which Austrailia is a part.

Originally, Austrailia was where Britain emptied it's over-crowded prisons.  It was a settlement for Ex-cons and paroled thieves, and prostitutes.  I'm sure the original Europeans found live hard there to begin with.

During World War Two, the Japanese tried to invade Austrailia, had they won, I'm sure life would have been worse in Austrailia, especially for those who are Non-Occident.

The modern world and Austrailia today has a longer life expenctancy due to better diet, better medicine, and anti-biotics which have greatly reduced infections.

We have better communication, better world trade, so you can get products in Austrailia that are produced around the world.

Overall, I'd say Austrailia is much better off today, than 500 years ago, before Europeans arrived.

  3. Fair enough that the above answerer responded on behalf of the human population. However, as to whether good or bad for the continent itself I would emphatically say 'bad'.

500 years ago the north of the continent would have substantially more rainforest, and massive forests all the way down the east coast. No soil erosion problems throughout due to the arrival of sheep and cattle, and mass clearing of the bush.

Wildlife extinction probably would be at a minimum, if any, instead of the 22 species of mammal that has become extinct since the arrival of the first fleet. Not to mention the 1500 species of fauna and flora that is currently on the impending extinction list.
