  1. They haven't sent any humans there but they were the first to send probes!

  2. How can somebody not know this? To date, only the Americans have been to the moon. The USSR did land several unmanned probes (most of which were designed to crash-land).

  3. The United States won the space race in July 1969. No other country has landed humans on the moon so far. If all goes well, we'll be the first country to land there again.

We're facing a certain amount of competition from China and possibly the EU, but it doesn't seem like a very close race at this point. The US is combining knowledge from the Apollo Program and useful advancements spawned by the soon to be retired Space Shuttle program to develop a disposable and interchangeable system of launch vehicles, probes and human piloted space craft. The Constellation Program will eliminate our current dependence on the Russian Soyuz system and enable a wider variety of missions thanks to the engineering and cost advantages gained though standardization.

Its worth noting, that the USSR did land the first mobile robotic space probe called Lunokhod in 1973. It was a great success especially when you consider the technology of the time and the primitive state of electronics compared today. It was a great accomplishment that should not be forgotten or ignored. Those engineers were consulted by NASA during the development of the Spirit and Opportunity Missions currently gathering scientific data from the surface of Mars outlasting is expected lifespan by several years.

Things are shaping up for an exciting period in space exploration during this century. I hope I live long enough to see ANYONE from Earth walking on Mars and hopefully, beyond.

    Good luck.

  4. No, they never launched any astronaut to the moon.

The spacecraft for a manned flight around the moon was not very reliable (if it landed intact at all, it had the tendency to land either in the Indian Ocean or far away from the Russian territory landing site), and thus never flown with humans on-board and the different spacecraft for a lunar landing was only tested unmanned, as the launch vehicle for a lunar mission was very unreliable. The only thing which was ever tested on the Soyuz-7K-L3 was the rescue system during a launch abort, which worked flawless.
