  1. No, and they have no plans to do so, at least, in the foreseeable future.  No Earth plant would survive the conditions on Mars.

  2. "the shrub" - do you mean there is some special bush on one of the rovers or on Phoenix (that no one knows about) that is supposed to be planted on Mars.

Since there is absolutely no water on Mars, very poor soil, below freezing all the time, and only 20% the amount of sunlight as on Earth, any shrub would die very quickly.

  3. Yeah man, they planted it in the astroturf :D

  4. No. The environment of Mars is very harsh indeed, and I don't think any Earth plants as large as shrubs would survive. If we're to plant things there, then they'll need to be genetically engineered to suit the Martian environment. Not only is it extremely cold and dry, the temperatures vary greatly through the day and seasons. Worst of all, the soil is very oxidizing, which is toxic to life (Ever hear all the vitamin commercials bragging about antioxidants?).

I imagine that any engineered plantlike life designed to live on Mars would be very similar to the lichens found in the arctic tundras of Earth, which survive in the environment here which is the closest to Mars, except for the abundance of water here.

  5. which would U recommend for minus 200 deg.F.
