  1. Being a PC is a full time job, for up to two years. And they prefer candidates with a college degree and work experience.

Here is a web site that can help you learn more about the skills and experience desired by long-term placement organizations such as PeaceCorps, VSO, UNV, etc, or organizations that don't charge volunteers but require volunteers to be highly-skilled, and how you can start to gain such experience locally:

  2. It has a silent "s" on the end - Peace Corps, just like Corps of Engineers, Marine Corps, A. P. Hill's 1st Corps. It is pronounced "core", though, not "corpse".

It is still a 27-month commitment; 3 months of training, 24 months of service.

92% of all PCV's have a college degree. The other 8% have 10 - 50 years of experience. It looks like you are 18 or so. Your chance of getting in is slight.

If you use the advanced search for Peace Corps, you will see advertisements for a dozen volunteer opportunities that are shorter. You can volunteer for as little as two weeks. You, however, have to pay the company that places you.

My web site has some FAQ's from Y!A and some stories from my time as a PCV.

  3. The Peace Corps is a full-time, usually multi-year *job.*  It involves significant training and is not a commitment one takes lightly.

If you're looking for something before college, check out an alternative:  http://www.usafreedomcorps.gov/for_volun...

While you're in college, there are a vast number of service-related opportunities.  Most large organizations have college branches (such as Habitat for Humanity), as well as dedicated groups that provide the overseas assistance that the Peace Corps is famous for.  Many fraternal organizations also offer service as an aspect of their programs, and there are "service fraternities" (such as Alpha Phi Omega) which are dedicated to service with a strong fraternal aspect to them.

  4. It depends. There used to be a lot of people joining the Peace Corps before the 2000's. Then there are complains of bug bites, death risks, starvation after 2000, with new standards being mandated. There are risks. Yes, you have to donate a lot of time to be in the Peace Corps, it's not like one month and quit. You have to go to different countries and donate your time in them. Often, in third world countries. A good estimate is that between six months to three years. We're not talking vacation, we're talking about fixing society.....but its your option if you want to go to college.

  5. Well, if you consider two years "a ton of time" then yes, that's the commitment. However, I can personally attest that it is time well spent! Peace Corps usually perfers a college degree, so give it some thought once you finish your education. Good luck!
