  1. I recently attended a refresher course on manual handling and the guidelines were shocking. A female can only carry approx 2 stone of weight safely so if the child is heavier than that then you are within your rights to demand apparatus to help you.

  2. After 6 months on my job moving furniture I thought I could pick up most anything and move it around, now I have a hernia, hurt knee and my hip hurts every day.

I don't recomend pushing it, if you hurt now, stop making it worse.

  3. No, is the short answer. Normally there is a policy involving the lifting/handling of children and how it should be avoided.  If there's a situation with a child who needs lifting, the matter should be discussed to find ways to avoid the man-handling.

  4. Unfortunately, if it is your job...Then you have to do it. But why are you doing it, is the child sick?

Anyway, if you keep doing it, your back will get worst like mine did. Now I can't work at all or lift anything heavier than a bag of sugar.

    Be careful.

  5. Maybe.  Each job should have a specific job description detailng amounts you are expected to lift, and how many times a day. Ask your supervisor for this information. Find out how much the child weighs and document how many times you have to lift her. If it is above your job description then the administration needs to decide if  the school or center can adequately meet the needs of the child and comply with their own policy. If you just can't manage the weight of the child, and it IS expected and specified in the policy manual, then you may need a doctor's note.  A good boss / company will respect your physical limitations if they want you to stay on. Talk to your employer and explain your limitation ,but also make sure they remember all the good and uniqe things you bring to the job. I have a couple employees who can't lift the heavier babies at my school, but they are wonderful workers, so I just put them with a different group of kids.  It was worth making the change to keep these wonderful ladies! Good luck!!

  6. there's no real reason you should be picking up a three year old child other than help it into a bath.  Three year old children can walk,

That is unless the child has a disability then you should have expected that when you took the job

  7. Ofsted recommends to lead they child by the hand and not to pick them up. If the child is disabled usually hoists even with Children are recommended. I would make your superviser aware of the problems you are having, get them to approach Childrens services to ask for recommendations if lifting is unavoidable, they may have courses in correct lifting proceedures available. Also see your GP, Backs once damaged cause a life time of pain.

  8. No, you shouldn't pick up load heavier than what is comfortable for you. You need to report it to your manager/supervisor and ask them to sort out something for you. Mention the Manual Handling Regulations and that if the load is inappropriate for you then they have to provide either some lifting equipment for you or another colleague who can help you lift the child. This is a serious matter, you don't want to do your back any damage and if you do then your employers are accountable for it. If needed, get a note from your GP that you are already suffering from some damage. Hope it is not permanent thought! Good luck, you do have rights at work and your employer cannot ignor basic health and safety laws.

  9. Yes, stop trying to get out of work and taking care of your child.

  10. a 3 years the child should be crawling or walking  when you go out you should use a type of pram or straps only pick up when necessary

  11. I think you should join him at school and learn English, so to speak.
