Have to use premium or super gas?

We just bought an infiniti ex35, and it says to use super gas. Will it hurt the engine if we use regular 87 grade?

  1. I would try one tank of 87 octane. If your car "pings" when you accelerate ... then you must use a higher octane. Next try 89 octane ... listen for "pinging" when you accelerate. There is no problem mixing different gasoline octanes. If you still ping, then you gotta use 91 octane!! Sorry about your luck!

  2. Yes, it will degrade the performance and longevity of the engine. Not using Premium will promote knocking and misfiring and wear down parts excessively.

  3. yes.  why did you buy that car with the price of gas?  if you could afford that car, you can afford the gas.

  4. no it will not hurt it. premium is really mad for high performance cars such a lambos, feraris, etc. and for ppl that are in love wit there cars and only want to give it the best of the best. which i was. but i have a GTO that "requires" premium, but i cant afford to be putting that in my 6.0 v8 that only get like 16 to the gallon. its ridiculous.

so all i do is use the 87 grade and then put the gas tank cleaner stuff. and it run absolutely great!

  5. Yes, you can use lower grade gas, but you will get worse mileage, your performance will suffer, and emissions will increase. But it will not damage your engine.

What most people here don't seem to realize, is that most cars which are designed to run on premium have "knock sensors" built into their engines. This detects pinging and lets the engines computer adjust the timing accordingly on a split second basis, which prevents the engine from being damaged.

"Your father will not damage his engine running any gasoline he can get in the United States, which might be as low as 87 in some areas. The knock sensors (many engines have more than one because they are bolted to the head, not the block) will sense the rapidly building pressure waves caused by gasoline igniting prematurely inside the combustion chamber. The engine-management computer will r****d this spark and prevent this condition. The system is good enough at this to preclude any damage."

But considering the first 2 factors, you would probably save money by using the proper octane. If you can't find the octane recommended for your car, (like in Mexico) put in the closest that you can. But otherwise, use what's recommended.

  6. I doubt it says "super gas". It probably has a minimum octane requirement like 91 or 93.

If you don't use the gas that is recommended, the following may happen:

Your gas mileage will go down, maybe enough to pay for the difference.

Your engine power will go down.

    You may damage your engine

    You may have warrantee problems.

    .

  7. use what the manufacturer recommends or be prepared for troubles down the road.

  8. You can use a lower octane gas on your car.  However you will experience more knocking and pinging as well as a slight performance decrease.

  9. Yes it will hurt the engine if you use 87 a lot.  Your car needs the higher octane gas because it will prevent knocking in the high performance engine(the engine in the ex35 is amazing by the way).  Using 87 octane won't necesarilly cause major engine damage because the computer will reprogram itself to use the lower octane gas.  But your engine will suffer if you do since your engine is designed to use to higher octane.  Take care of your new car and give it the good stuff.
