  1. Hanoi..last summer

    I recommend it

  2. I lived in Vietnam for 16 years and, in the last three decades since I left the country, I have visited it twice, with the most recent one in last summer.  It is difficult to compare Vietnam to other tourist destinations, e.g. Hawaii, Hong Kong, Europe, or Thailand.  With the war and the earlier French-Indochine links, there is an intriguing factor about visiting Vietnam, especially to many westerners and more specifically to many people living in such countries as USA or France.

    Itself a big country, Vietnam has many cities, each offering a different view and reason for your visit.  I'm actually planning a family trip there this summer and am listing out the major destinations here:

    * Ha-Noi/Hue/Hoi-An: culture/people, sightseeing of historical and traditional places

    * Ha Long Bay: sightseeing (cave, bay, beach)

    * Da-Nang: beautiful beach (I recommend a stay in Furama)

    * Nha-Trang: beach/resort/island & also a bit of sightseeing

    * Saigon: people, activities, food

    * Mekong River tour: people, river, sightseeing, fruits/food

    * Phu Quoc island: sightseeing/beach

    Since it has been more than 30 years since the war, you would see less and less remnants about the war itself.  There might be a few museums left, some old regime's buildings/palaces to see, or the Cu-Chi tunnel which is sure to intrigue many foreigners.  Driving through the cities would give you a peak into the more agricultural and rural part of Vietnamese's everyday life.  The major cities have seemed to grow and develop a lot in the recent years.

    So overall, to visit Vietnam is to enjoy a combination of its culture, its beauty, its food, as well as its history.  Many places to go, a lot more than what I listed above, so just pick the time, plan the tour, pack your bags, and go.  Enjoy!
