If you're putting lots of effort in, but still not getting good grades, chances are that you're doing something wrong.  Maybe you didn't understand the question, or maybe you didn't answer it properly.  Perhaps your answer didn't have the relevant information.  Perhaps it's not structured properly.  

Sometimes a one page paper that is well argued, relevant and structured can be better than a thirteen page paper that's poorly written, full of irrelevant information, and has no beginning, middle or end!

Try to talk to your teachers and ask them how you can improve.  Be prepared to take their criticisms on board and put some effort in to improve in the areas where they say you're weak.
