  1. So you did have a mammogram and a ultrasound? Did either test find the lump? What other symptoms are you having besides the lump? What type of pain is there? If the mammogram and/or ultrasound find the lump, it could be nothing and it could be something. Depending on your medical history and symptoms it could be several things. Many women feel lumps around the time of their period, so if the tests were done during that time, it could just be a lump associated with your menstrual cycle. Or if you have fibrocystic b*****s, which is basically the same thing as lumps during or near your period. Cutting back on caffeine and chocolate could help this. Then there are fibroadenomas which are small benign tumors of the breast that can sometimes cause pain. A biopsy can be done on any lump that they find if you want to make sure of what it is. Then unfortunately there is always the chance of breast cancer when a lump is found. This all depends on symptoms. Further testing can be done with an MRI if necessary. Goodluck.

  2. If the ultrasound was inconclusive, then they're ordering a MRI hoping to resolve the question without doing a biopsy.

It's your right to argue the point with your doctor. However, a biopsy can be a good bit more uncomfortable than a MRI, and may be a bit more expensive too. Not sure about that.

I thought it was pretty typical to go from diagnostic mammogram/ultrasound to biopsy, without a MRI in between.

Push back a little with the doc. He should be able to provide a good reason if he wants a MRI instead of a biopsy.

  3. An MRI can only confirm a mass, which has been confirmed by the Mammogram and Sono.  Your next step would be a biopsy to determine if the lump is malignant.  If it isn't malignant, it may ease your mind enough so that the discomfort eases.  It it is malignant than you will know the next steps needed.

I too found a lump that was painful and it turned out to be cancer.  They sent me for so many diagnostic tests after the cancer was confirmed that I was glad when the tests were over and I could finally move forward with treatment.
