Have uneven walls and can't afford to have the room plastered. Any suggestions on what i should do?

The walls are very uneven. I stripped the wallpaper to realise the previous tenants have left the walls in bad condition. I live in a flat so we're not talking concrete walls. More like thick board with plaster over the top. On one wall they have actually stripped the thick cardboard or sound proofing as one person called it off completly to expose the plaster wall underneath. I cant leave my living room undecorated so any ideas? At this moment in time any suggestion would be appriciated. By the way im female and my decorating experience is limited so ....................... i don't know.

Hang up bead board.  Go floor to celing, and put up crown molding.  Then you can paint the bead board any color you want, just use the pre-primed boards.
