Question:

Have waiters gotten greedy?

When did the normal tip for waiters go from 10% to 20%?! I don't get why 10% is too low for waiters now. They went with 10% for decades without complaining and now 10% is an insult. Sure, food is more expensive now, but the worth of a dollar is less, too. Maybe I would feel more sorry for them if they claimed their tips on their taxes like they are supposed to. Till then, good service gets you 15%. 20% if I'm at a fancy restaurant.

What does everyone else think?

  1. i think thats true and i dont care anymore cuz i still only give em 10% haha lol anyways thats what u should do they are not gonna complain and if they do just be like ITS  tip not a normal payment  thnx 4 poiting that out i didint even no lol

  2. stop worrying about percentages.if the waitress suck and doesn't know how to do her job right and cant remember anything or forgets stuff and she just basically sucks then give her 2 pennies or something.if i have a good waitress she gets a good tip if i have a better than good waitress then she gets a better than good tip,if i have an excellent waitress than she gets an excellent tip.who gives a c**p about what the percentage of tipping is.if thats the case soon all or most waitresses will give crappy to no serves but still get their "percentage" tip.give them what they deserve if they do their job the right way.lots of waitresses dont care to much any more because no matter how great they do they know or think they are just getting a percentage tip.thats stupid

  3. Probably do to inflation.  Most restaurants require the servers to tip out a percentage of their total sales to the hosts, bussers, and bartenders.  So if you leave a 10% tip it is now a 7% tip, and you still get taxed on the money you are really not getting.

  4. not all, but many restaurants actually include tips in wages, which means they can legally pay servers less than minimum wage. many servers depend on tips just to make minimum wage.

and it's not like they're the ones raising the standard tip percentage (but, yes, 10 percent today is cheap. or implies that you were unhappy with the service). times change. milk and bread also cost more than they did 'back in the day'.

  5. Its been 20% for like forever...but they have to do a stellar job for 20% IMO.

  6. I give 15% for good service 20% for great and 10% if they didn't do anything.
