nber (national bureau of economic research) says that the start of negative real economic growth was december 2007 so, if we need two consecutive quarters to be considered a recession wouldn't we be in one? why do people keep saying "we are not in a recession"? i also heard that they won't even say we are in a recession until about a year later even though we have had negative gdp, why is this does anyone know? is that true?

  1. No, but it's barely positive (something like .9% for the first quarter.)  But my macroeconomics professor said that we are in a growth recession, where growth is still positive, but so low that unemployment is growing.

  2. No. Not even one "Officially

  3. It's called denial.

  4. We have not had one yet (Q1 2008 was not negative) It is possible that the current quarter will be the first, but we won't know that until Fall.

  5. we have had more then that for they have been juggling the numbers and lying to us .
