  1. yes, ever hear of a sonic boom? its when a plane or rocket car breaks the sound barrier/starts going faster than sound.  even some rocket sleds have gone faster than sound

  2. The speed of sound is roughly 700 mph.  Military jet fighters travel over 2000 mph.

Ever hear of MACH?   Mach is the speed of sound.  So if a jet is going Mach 2, it is going twice the speed of sound.

  3. Yes, Chuck Yeager was the first person to break the sound barrier

  4. Oh yes.  The speed of sound is known one way as mach 1.  Jets can travel faster than sound, and sonic booms are the result when an object in the atmosphere, like a fighter jet or even the Space Shuttle, exceeds the speed of sound.

  5. Chuck Yeager flew the X-1 in the 1950's over Palmdale faster than the speed of sound.

  6. Yes. Most obvious example would be the Concorde aircraft. Otherwise, fighter jets regularly break the sound-barrier as one can notice by the accompanying big bang.

As for light.....nope. And I don't see that one coming in the near future.

  7. Charles Yeager broke the sound barrier back in 1947.
