  1. We're kinda old, so every time we take a trip out of town we have to stop and use the restroom every couple of hours. I keep telling my husband if we would stop buying coffee and cokes at every restroom stop, we might not have to make so many restroom stops..........So yeah, I kinda feel like I should buy something if I use their toilet paper and water for my own personal relief........

  2. Oh mercy me, yes when it was a real cross my legs and bite my lower lip, emergency!

  3. LOL nope!

  4. Of course...which is why I always make my pit stops at Starbucks:-))

There is one on every corner, and always something I can use or want, be it coffee, food, or just a bottle or water.

  5. Yes! I feel so conspicuous if I just walk straight to the loos and then out again.

  6. Yes, I've done that at McDonald's. I'll buy a small fry and a coke

  7. Sounds like something i would do, I hate useing people.

  8. Yeah.

    It's just etiquette...

however, if you want to make it a cheap restroom stop just go to a gas station and get a pack of gum

you don't feel bad and the owner doesn't feel used

however even so most restaurant owners are sympathetic to your plight and might even feel bad about you forking over money for something you don't want just so you could use the facilities

  9. I will buy a small fry or coke or something cheap on occasion if I need to use the restroom and stop off somewhere. I think its kind of rude to stop in and use the facilities someplace if you aren't a customer.  I don't do it often but from time to time I have over the years.

  10. Absolutely!  Don't you just hate that?  I love the places where you can slip in and slip out unnoticed.

Mostly the mom n' pop shops are the ones I feel compelled to pay for restroom use, not the corporate stations or fast food places.

  11. A  lot of merchants do not allow customers or browsers to use their facilities even when you do buy something.

If it is a restaurant you shouldn't have a problem using the facility  without having to buy a coffee or something to eat.  By simply being polite and courteous and asking they'll usual turn and look the other way.  Just don't make it a habit.

After all you could play the game by sitting down, asking for a menu, getting up and going to the toilet then just walking out of the restaurant.

At least by asking their permission you were being honest.

As last resort, just ask for the manager and offer a couple of dollars and tell him you feel quite embarrassed but desperate.  He'll understand.

    Addendum:

Actually I have a confession to make.  It did happen to me-  once- in Mexico.  I suddenly had to go- and you know what I mean.  I ran into what looked something like a Taco Bell joint.  I quickly ordered something on the menu but couldn't speak Spanish so didn't now what I'd ordered and then ran to the toilet.

It turned out to be a huge bowl of refried beans with chili sauce.  I ended staying in the restaurant for 4 hours.  Three of those hours were spent in the toilet!
