  1. oooh..this is my fave thing at the moment! I signed up to one of those genealogy sites and a monster has been unleashed!

Not my family but my husbands. Someone 'connected' to me on this site and she had loads of photos. She mailed one through and we all nearly died..it was the unbelievable image of our son. There are pictures of my husband's great great grandparents and HE has  widows peak just like my husband and kids. Weird isn't it?

Apparently this 'face' from the past made the gates to Wellbeck Abbey. I intend to be a total nerd and go on a visit!

    Do you look like yours?

EDIT- It's when the hairline comes to a point in the middle of the forehead..like this-

    http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl...

no such strangeness on my side I hasten to add...

  2. I have pictures of all of my mother's grandparents and all of my father's grandparents.  I also have pictures of my paternal grandmother's grandmothers (my gr-gr-grandmothers).  And I have a picture of my paternal grandfather at the age of 2.  He was a beautiful little fella!  My brother's son at the age of 2 looked a lot like this picture.

My maternal grandfather's sister was the family member on that side of the family who got all the old photos going back to the 1860s.  I have seen the photos once, more than 30 years ago.  That great-aunt has passed away and I don't know her children and grandchildren at all to even know who to ask about getting scans or copies of the pictures.

  3. We have family pictures going back to the 1860s,there are slight family likenesses, noses, hands, eyes, ears are all strong family characteristics.

  4. The oldest picture I got is of my great great great grandparents and no I look nothing like them lol

  5. I have some pictures of Grandparents and I have some pictures of famous ancestors that were found on the internet. Nope don't think I resemble any of them so far.

A widows peak - I assume you mean hair. imagine the old Dracula movies where there is a point coming down on the forehead. Thats a widows peak. Fran Drescher has a natural one.

  6. Yes I do have pictures of my great grandparents, I also have a picture taken of my father, my uncle and my grandpa sometime around 1930

  7. Yes. I have two, one male and one female. The male looks like the males in our family but the female does not seem to resemble anyone of this generation.

By their dress they look to date around 1860's.

  8. You are very fortunate... each person's individual and unique 'story' will affect what you have.  My grandfather was born in the 1830s, and I have yet to prove who his parents were.  My kid's gr gr grandfather died in 1890, and we do have a tintype of him, which has been digitized to a photo.

In earlier times, family pics were treasures and often hoarded by one family member.  The whole focus has changed now, where any of us can take an old photo, have it scanned, and share the file with others.  Many times, this can also be used to improve or repair pics.

    Have fun!

  9. My grandmother died at 38 but was the second youngest of a family of 8. We have a picture of the complete family, including my great grandparents which would have been taken in the 1880's.  Funny to think that that picture actually shows my grandmother and I am not even an oap yet !!! Some of my grandmother's brothers and sisters definitely look as if they were in their 40's at the time the photo was taken and my grandmother just a child. It's hard to believe the mum and dad in the picture were just my great grandparents when  nowadays people in their 60's become great grandparent.   The picture is very formal, females all with long dresses and frilly collars right up to their neck and the males in their Sunday best suits. Apart from the build of my grandmother to one of my aunts I cannpt really see any resemblences.

  10. The oldest family photograph I have is from 1890.  It has my Norwegian great-great-great grandparents and their 14 children, some grown up and some still babies.  My gr-gr-gr-grandfather(Peter Peterson Golie born 1844) is holding my gr-gr-grandmother (who was 2 years old) on his lap in this photo. It is from this huge family book, tracing each of the 14 kids families!  I also learned from this book that my gr-gr-gr-grandpa fought in the Civil War in the 15th Wisconsin Regiment.

The only resemblance is the Norwegian blond hair and blue eyes.

  11. Yes and the only resemblance I can see is the nose of my great great grandmother seems to have carried through and her pettiness.

  12. I have photos of my great grandparents (my grandchildrens great great great grandparents) and they are very formal, stiff portraits.  We can see some resemblance, particularly in the menfolk.

  13. I have photos of my paternal great great grandfather -- he's wearing a confederate army outfit. I've even got a copy of his army record.

  14. I have a copies of an early photo of my 3rd great-grandmother when she was age 70. She's dressing colonial style, like she did in her youth. None of us resemble her.

However, I'm a dead ringer for an 8th cousin from the 19th Century and I've got a living 6th cousin genealogy contact who looks exactly like my grandfather on that side.

  15. photo of my mothers grandfather as a young private on his way to the western front 1916.he came back and never spoke about what he saw in the trenches to anyone.

  16. Let's see...

I have pictures of all my great-grandparents

    Seven of my great-great-grandparents

    3 of my ggg-grandparents

    1 gggg-grandpa with his mother (my ggggg-g'ma - wow!)

And yes, I look exactly like one of my gg-grandmothers!

  17. my photos only go back as far as great grandparents... it must be great to have photos going back so far.

  18. I don't even have photos of my grandparents - I think my mother invented the word "declutter" and Feng Shui.  Her philosophy was that you know what people look like so why bother to keep pictures.  You know when you were born or married so why keep Birth, Marriage Certificates, etc.?

When she died I had nothing but her Death Certificate.  I have since purchased everything I can find of the whole family right back to 1837.  Unfortunately, my daughter takes after my mother so I guess they and the Family Trees will all end up on a bonfire.
