  1. "The bus driver does not have anything to do with the money on the bus."

What makes you think that? Most buses nowadays are one-person operated. The driver is 100% responsible for collecting fares.

  2. I did this some years ago when I was in my twenties on a jouney from Liverpool Pierhead to the Wavertree and a lady paid the ten pence and would not give me her address so I could pay it back. I shows no credit to me but is an example of the kindness you can meet in Liverpool

  3. and you did what you had to do that was nice of you good deed for the day.

  4. yes it was an elderly lady not of my district who did not qualify for cheap fares, i wanted to get home like the rest on the bus.

  5. Would you go into a bakers to buy a loaf priced at 90 pence, but only offer the shop assistant 80 pence for it?

    No, you would not

So why try to defraud bus companies in the same way?

  6. i agree with Jake, you must try to remember that all bus operaters are private companies,de-regulation from the government was many years a go,and bus drivers these days run a mobile commuters shop,so they are fully responsible for collecting full fares and waying up takings at the end of the day,if i let a youngster off 10p,he will try it again and again, and he probably wouldn't be the only one who tries too, this kind of shortfall reflects MY float and MY money, why should i give it away.children should ride free if they have a valid or plausible reason, like a journey home or to school, but not for joy riding or purely for fun to get one over the system with their mates.I would like to go in my local pub sometimes and ask if i can have 10p off my pint cos i don't have enough money,i think you would know what they would say.

P.S. not all bus drivers are ***-holes,only those that you turn them into.

  7. It never fails to amaze me that passengers think it is OK to offer less than the fare for the ride or want to pay it in 2 pence pieces. Would they do it at in the pub or the supermarket?. No.

All buses advertise that you should have the correct fare, if you haven't then walk.

Buses run to a very tight schedule, if passengers get on and pay 70p in copper, the driver has to count it. By the time he has checked your not short changing him, the bus is late. And what do you passengers do, you complain!.

  8. A few years back one of the driver's charged me a higher price than usual - I HAD to pay as I needed to get to work.

In the evening I went to Bus Station/Terminal and asked one of the Inspectors to check what the fare should be, it was what I was paying previously.  He told me just told me to hane over the right money and go and sit down.  Once you sit down the drivers can NOT touch you - if they do it's assault or rape.

  9. yes, when i was at uni & I thought it was ridiculous to hold up everyones journey and embrass the person. Plus I was late for my lecture, so I just handed over the money.

  10. Coins are only legal tender up to certain limits:

    1p & 2p pieces up to 20p total.

    5p & 10p pieces up to £5

    20p & 50p pieces up to £10

£1 and £2 coins are legal tender in any amount.

People can accept more coins if they want to, but nobody has the right to make them.

  11. when i was at college years ago i got on the bus and paid in 2 pence pieces, it was only a 70p fare but the bus driver threatened to throw me off, i pointed out that is the queens currency and legal tender.

i then reported him to the bus company, i never saw him again.

some bus drivers are so horrible, makes you wonder why they employ them.

  12. yes and the bus driver says please pay or get off the bus and other passengers would have to help the person with the fare

  13. As an ex bus driver myself, I can say that this has happened to me a few times, and my  answer was always the same , that the correct fare has to be paid. Reason, the driver is responsible at the end of the day for ensuring that the money handed into the cash office, matches the valve of tickets issued.

Ok, so some of you might say, but its only 10p and why doesn't the driver "do the decent thing" and pay it himself? OK fair point, if it only happened once, but it did not. So, over the drivers working life, that could amount upto a fair amount of money out of the drivers own pocket, and we all go to work for one thing, to earn money for ourselves. Also, if the passenger got away with it once, they could try it again.

What the driver could do, is issue an unpaid fare voucher, take the passengers name and address and advise them to pay the fare at the bus company.

  14. the operator is responsible for getting there patrons where they need to be in a safe and timely manner, thats the drivers job, i wouldnt lose my life over the fare, and most people overpay anyways, so the driver that screams and hollars about the fare, has some other issues at home, cause, as much money they make they dont have to be concerned with 10 cents

  15. at the end of the day he has to account for the over and shorts if the money don't tally with his receipts.

  16. I know this is the bus drivers job, but this happened to my daughter who was 15 at the time and in school uniform. granted she looks older than she actually is, but thankfully another passenger gave her the money.  I complained afterwards and wished i had the persons details to thank them.  To answer your question,  if i had the ten pence i would give it to the person  who is short of the fare to shut the driver up and carry on with my journey.
