  1. Weekends are always crowded. Mid-week (non holiday) things are not so busy, but some slopes and lifts are also not open.

Snowshed, Ram's Head, and K-1 base areas tend to be the most congested. Bear Mountain and Skyeship base have better parking, but still try to get there early. If you can get to K-1 early for good parking, that isn't as bad either...but stay clear of Snowshed (group area) or Ram's Head (family area). They tend to be crowded.

Snowshed chairs, the K-1 Gondola, Superstar, Skyeship Mid-station and the lifts at Bear Mountain usually have long lines. On a busy weekend most lifts are open. Mid-mountain lifts generally don't have long lines. (North Ridge, South Ridge, Canyons).

Be prepared for the snowguns to be running on Superstar and Outer Limits. I've seen them run those guns on several weekends.

The Skye Peak area can be somewhat confusing. I ski here often and still need a map to discern which trail goes where.

Be mindful of the time and where you parked. There are plenty of trail signs to get you back to your car, but if a sign says...don't ski past this point at 3:30pm...don't do it. You'll be taking a shuttle bus back to your car.

Don't overlook the cruisers on Snowdon and Ramshead. They can be fun especially after you've punished yourself on the higher slopes.

If you ski off property, take a map and a compass...not a trail map...a topo. Bring a stove and something to cook soup in. If you get lost you will end up in Shrewsbury or Mendon. Cash helps too....Search & Rescue costs are hefty.

The cappuccino bars are reasonable but the cafeteria coffee is overpriced.

Long Trail Brewery is only a short drive east of the access road on Rt.4 (closer if you are parked at Bear or Skyeship)...go get some good brew! (Blackbeary Wheat rules!)

The Inn at Long Trail is a mile or so west of the access road on Rt.4. Food is excellent.

On the access road I reccommend Sushi Yoshi or The Grist Mill. The Wobbley is a good place too. The Pickle Barrel often has national acts on stage during big weekends.

Gas at the Mobil on the access road is way overpriced as is the Shell at the intersection of Rt.4 and the Access road. Get gas in Woodstock or Rutland. Although the Shell station's deli makes some great grinders....and you can stock up on booze there too.

The "Shops" at the base of the access road tend to have the best sales.

Big-K isn't my favorite place in VT, but it's in the top 5.

  2. Yes, but it was over 10 years ago.  It was pretty good, but crowded.  Tons of people go there.

I live and ski in Utah now, though.  Take a trip out here, the Rockies are a million times better than the east coast! ;)
