  1. Kyoto is a lovely city. There is a lot to see so you are better to choose one area and walk to see everything there. There are a lot of temples on the hill which are all quite different a very interesting. You can get these flyers with a walking route. It is in English and quite easy to follow. The tourist information offices by the train stations had them if i remember rightly.

Heinan Temple and gardens were gorgeous. The Imperial palace is very large - if you want to go through with an English speaking guide you need to be there before 3.pm. May pay to check - you have to get a pass.

Shoren-in and the numerous temples near the pagoda are all interesting.Maruyama Park area is lovely. This is a very traditional area. You can wander around and just come across different interesting things at every turn. There was a very interesting shopping centre and in there is the Yak and Yeti a nepalese restaurant! If you want a change from Japanese food this was great! It is in the Lonely Planet.

  2. It really depends on how long you’ll be staying there and the sorts of things you’re interested in. In any case, here are some of my personal favourites:

The Arashiyama area (which is apparently beautiful during the fall).

Kiyomizu-dera (wonderful view of the city, but can be very crowded).

Fushimi-Inari Taisha (best visited either in the morning or the evening).

Sanjûsangen-dô (1001 statues of Kannon, and located right next to the Kyoto National Museum).

Tetsugaku-no-Michi (i.e. Path of Philosophy, which also gives one a chance to see several temples and shrines in one go).

  3. I went for a couple of days. As you know, there are thousands of temples in the area; for starters, I suggest Kinkakuji and Ryoanji (I'm not sure about the roma-ji spelling). Also, try researching the Torakku, a romantic sort of train ride through the mountains. There's a lot to see in terms of nature; lots of good walks.
