I read there is a carving of the Descending God there, to mark that side of the pyramid as the one to descend. If so, is there a carving of an ascending god on the other side?

  1. I went to Cobá and I was simply as astonished with the greatness of the place. In my opinion is one of the greatest mayan cities. I couldn't believe the view when I got to the top fo the mayor piramid, there were kilometers and kilompeters of thick virgin rain forest, it was one of the most beautiful scenaries I've ever seen. Then I also loved the other great piramids that remain covered in part by the jungle. It's really a magical place.

I had never heard about the gods you talk about but I find it very interesting. The mayans were one of the greatest cultures that have ever existed and there's a lot to research about them. They were beyond any other culture in terms of astronomy and mathematics, they also made many predictions and the culture is full of mistery and I find it even a bit creepy. It's a pitty we know so little about this amazing culture and that most of their "codices" were destroyed.

About what you say of the descending and ascending god is very interesting. I would like to research about it. What happens is that there are so many "estelas" and carvings at Cobá that it's difficult to know and see everything there; furthermore, just a minimum precentage of the place has been investigated so very little is known and also remember that all the piramids at Cabá are covered or part covered by the jungle so it's probable that the ascending God in the other side of the pyramid hasn't been yet decovered.

  2. There is no ascending god.  It's best to go up and down the main stairway.  The descending god is also called the diving god, because that's what he's doing diving into water.  The diving god can also be seen on the Castillo Temple at Tulum.
