Question:

Have you changed your name (in Australia) after being married in Thailand?

My boyfriend and I got legally married in Thailand. We went through all the translation process and Australian Embassy stuff and then did the paperwork in the Amphurs office in Phuket.

Now, a few months later - I was to change my surname to that of my husband. I realise that the only way to do this is to "legally" change my name at the Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages but I need to know some more info from someone who's done it before...

I am currently in the process of getting the wedding certificate (1 page) translated to attach with my application for name change. However, when we were married we were given a 3 page document and a wedding certificate. The translation office is getting the 1 page document translated (as you pay per page) - but I am wondering if this is correct and, perhaps, it should have been the more "detailed" 3 page doc that we needed to have translated?

Do you (Australians only pls) have any advice regarding this?

  1. For the most accurate advice, if you are still in Thailand call the Australian Embassy in Bangkok and explain your situation.

    Embassy address: 37 South Sathorn Road, Bangkok - Telephone: 02 344 6300 - Fax: 02 344 6593

  2. When you Register your marriage at the District Office in Thailand you name is changed on the marriage certificate.

  3. The one page document should suffice.  Although I'm American we never got anything but the certificate.  The only thing I can imagine that is three pages is the paperwork you submit to the embassy before you get married.
