  1. not really...but seen them do on Discovery channel

  2. It is more dangerous today than it was 30 years ago, but, it still has less risk (if the person is knowledgeable in chasing) than most people realize.

The increased risk today comes from the increased number of chasers (And people who think they are chasers.)  and their lack of common driving sense when they are chasing. There are many people who convergence around any large storm now days and the increased traffic along with a lot of poor driving make chasing more dangerous than 30 years ago when you rarely saw another chaser.  Such things as speeding, reckless driving, parking in the middle of roads, disrespect of private property, taking chances by putting themselves in vulnerable positions to get a "better" picture or video, are all unnecessary risks that I still refuse to take.

When I was first married, my wife refused to let me chase (which I had done for several years before we were married) until I talked her into riding along with me a few times. After she saw that I chased sensibly and with caution, she not only let me day chase by myself, but even allowed me to take our son (at six months of age) along with me on days the babysitter wasn't available. We had several very memorable chases together.  He is now in his 30s and  doesn't remember them. In fact he often slept through many of them including one of the noisiest, hail producing storms I ever chased.

If done correctly, storm chasing has about the the same risk of driving to the local grocery store.

If done incorrectly, you are putting yourself and others at risk of  serious injury or worse.

That is why experience chasers highly recommend that a beginner ride along with an experienced chaser several times and learn the safe way to do it before trying it on their own. It is also better to have a couple of people along to observe and assist while the driver concentrates on driving rather than chasing by yourself.
