Question:

Have you ever attempted to build your own wood splitter or logsplitter? How did that work out for you?

I am a hydraulic engineer that has seen thousands of shade-tree attempts at homemade woodsplitters that didn't work, were horribly designed, totally unsafe, and just basically wrought with bad ideas.

Just wondered if anyone has ever tried and could tell me how your experience went.

  1.     Back on the farm my father and I took a large pipe remover bit, a six inch I think it was and, welded it to a frame that would fit on the three point hitch off the old Massey and the power take off., then we reinforced the framework and made a large bar that when a log was pushed into the bit, it would hit the bar and hold it until the bit screwed into it and split it.

It didn't work the first few times, we had to reinforce it and rebuild it but, after the trials were over, we used it for up to thirty cord of hardwood firewood a year. We had it for about thirty years.

  2. i thought it was pretty simple as long as you got the tools and know-how,welder,various steel, mower engine ,hydro pump, hydro ram arm,try lookin at some pics of splitters and copy the best you can.....good luck

  3. beleve it or not my uncle made one for his sinor project in HS and he is now 34 it has been used every year and have only had to put a different axel on it(for pulling on roads) but be sure that all your welds are safe and strong that last thing you want is for one of them to break and hurt someone get a friends so you can see how they are built

  4. My dad made one about two years ago. He used the motor off the power-washer and it works really well. It is a bit slow, though.
