Have you ever been addicted to something?

A few years ago I think I was "addicted" to working out. I'd work out in the morning at home then I'd go to the gym at night. Looking through my old Franklin Planner from a few years ago (where I charted my workouts), I see that there were a couple months where I worked out every single day without a day off!! So I think it was an obsession (I lived by the Jane Fonda slogan, "Go for the burn!", and it was bad too because I was doing it all wrong and didn't really get that big (though I was toned as h**l). I finally came full circle and stopped working out entirely for a while. Now I'm more realistic and sane about it and workout 3-4 days a week (at least I *try* to).

Other than that, I don't think I've been addicted to anything. Maybe Yahoo Answers! LOL Though I'm spending less and less time here since I have actual "work" to do that takes me away from the computer and don't care as much about YA like I did.

So what was your addiction and how did you overcome it?

  1. Two things.

    Mac and cheese and Milk.

I went for like two years to having mac and cheese for lunch every single day with a side of milk.

  2. I was addicted to some thinga and I am addicted to playin my game cube to a point. But I am addicted and can't live without music.

  3. I was an overeater.  I substituted that for smoking.  I quit that and substituted that for losing weight.  I lost weight and then became addicted to anonymous s*x with many partners.  (I figured now that I had a decent body, why not.)  I then tried to quit the s*x and that led to no longer wanting to be alone in any fashion. I found myself at the bars or coffeehouses all the time because I was scared of being alone.

That led back to having s*x with people again.  I am now trying to find something healthy to substitute for that.

(Wow!  Typing this out makes me sound all sorts of crazy.  There goes my cyber dating chances, LOL)

  4. i am addicted to your pecs...and there seems to be nothing i can do about it.

  5. Funnily enough I've also been addicted to "the body beautiful" and there was a time when I HAD to work out every day otherwise I felt like a failure if I didn't or couldn't.  That was a few years ago and it took me about 6 months to realise I was being stupid and was actually carrying too much muscle for my size (I'm only 5 feet tall).  I liked the way I looked, but it wasn't right, so I just stopped, I didn't even work out once a week or anything like that.  I have gotten back into it for most of this year, and if I can I will do something every day, but physically I'm restricted now and I admit I'm starting to feel like a failure again because I can't do what I used to.  I think much of it is not wanting to admit that my body is letting me down, even though it clearly is most of the time.  I wouldn't care if I was old and doddery, but I'm not.  Essentially that is/was my addiction, but I'm not really over it.

And of course there's this place.  It's well and truly got me, and it wasn't until someone pointed it out to me today that I realised I'm here far too much.  Question is, can I leave it behind for a while?  I'm thinking no, I can't...............

  6. When I was a teenager I was addicted to getting messed up on drugs and alcohol. I never had a drug of choice like a lot of addicts. I just took anything that would put me in an altered state. It didn't matter what is was. I was abused when I was young and I never dealt with it. That on top of normal teenage angst and depression made me want to escape from reality. I didn't do it because I liked it. I did it because I felt the only way to deal with my life was to not deal with it.

As bad as I was I never lost sight of my potential and my dreams. That's what kept me from losing all hope. I dealt with what I had been running from and I learned how to do it without drugs and alcohol.

  7. I am definitely addicted to caffeine!  I literally cannot function without it in the morning. LOL I do think I'm a little bit addicted to Y/A at times, but it comes and goes!

EDIT:  And I love my caffeine addiction like a little child & have no desire to overcome it at all!

  9. I was addicted to an MMORPG a few years ago.

  15. Im addicted to coffee

  16. yahoo answers and world of warcraft...

  17. Even though Im not on much [I go back and forth] I get pretty addicted to Y!A.

I'm addicted to working out also, I have a schedule. I get mad when something or some one interrupts it. I'm addicted to sports and all that other stuff.

    ..yeah.

  18. I was addicted to a single person. I could not get them out of my head. I was so addicted to that person. I would wake up and all day think of that person. That is the only thing that I have ever wanted so bad that it hurt. So when people say they are addicted I always think I have been there. The only thing that got me over my addiction was time and always having something to do. I could not sit down and wonder what that person was doing. I also say that person when ever I am talking about them. I don't know if that is right, but it helps me. I tried everything possible to get them out of my mind. It's funny how the thing you are addicted to makes you so happy when you are not addicted to it anymore.

  19. I was addicted to drugs and alcohol. . . . Pretty much anything that made me feel good. I've been in recovery for over 6 years now. I go to 12 step meetings and I work as an addictions counselor. Before that, during my first year clean, I had to go to residential treatment for 4 months, a halfway house for 5 months, and independent living for 3 more months to truly arrest the problem. Believe me, I didn't want to do all that, but I knew I had to. I also have been attending meetings consistently for the past 6 years, have a sponsor, and I work the 12 step program. It helped me! I've never relapsed.

I feel that being an addict  has helped me find my purpose in life - to help others who have the same problem find a way out.
