Hello

The HMRevenue has been paiyng us some working and child tax credit since last year but now we received a letter and slip asking a ridiculous amount of money because they say we were overpaid.... If we had that amount of money for paying them back, obviously we were not receiving benefits in the first place...we cant pay even if they split for 12 months...!

Have you ever been is this situation?

What did you do?

And what should we do??

  1. Go to your local CAB. You can find your nearest one on the site below. They can give you advice on this matter and possibly raise this a social policy issue. There's a lot of it happening at the moment. Are you still getting tax credits? Has your situation changed and you didn't inform them until recently? Your tax credits are worked out on last year's income. If you can prove that you are not responsible for the overpayment and they were duly informed of changes when they happened, you may be able to get a reduction or have it written off.

  2. I was in contact with the Child's tax Credit and I owe them a small amount of money but they are going to deduct it from my taxes at a later stage.

  3. ive had a bit of a nightmare with them regarding my tax.. i left my employment and went to live in holland for 5 years and when i returned there was a bill for £37,281.96p because they thought that i was self employed and not living abroad.. after numerous phone calls to them and being fobbed off from one department to another and having to totally defend my case when the bailiffs called demanding money or they take my belongings, i managed to convince them and proof to them that i was living abroad and did not owe them anything. To my horror and surprise they still sent me a further demand and a court hearing (the demand this time was for £41,804.55p) because costs had been occured during the time up to the court case. I went to court and the magistrates said how absurd that this should happen and the inland revenue had made a grave mistake and bad error on their behalf and it was thrown out of court with them paying the additional costs. 4 weeks later the bailiffs arrived at my door because they had a debt collection notice served upon me from inland revenue for the sum of £3600 and i showed them the paper work from the courts and they left. i phoned inland revenue yet again to explain that the bailiffs had come round demanding money , and they said they knew nothing about it. 3 weeks later i received another bill for £5177.25p saying that i owed them this. i have not made any further enquiries about it and i dont care anymore, as they are making thousands of mistakes with everyone , but the worry and stress it has caused has now made me file an official complaint to the home office regarding these matters.. i hope you can resolve the hassle they are giving you and dont pay them anything until they have concrete evidence that you actually owe them.. best of luck     and dont let them grind you or your family down...

  4. this happened to my dads girlfriend, eventually they took her to court, but it wasnt really like that, it involved her sitting in a room with about another 50 people, and the decision was made that she would pay back £5 a week for about 10 years or something rediculous like that! Dont worry about it, its out of your control anyways!
