  1. Your problem has everything to do with your saddle. If she is reluctant to go forward and bucked you off, the saddle does NOT fit her. A horse who is saddle broke should not react differently to different saddles if they fit properly. Unless you change from english to say western, this happens because western saddles have a larger foot print.

To answer your question my TB sent me to the hospital a month ago after a spooking bucking bronco fit.

  2. Yep i been bucked off. kicked, rolled over on,steped on,bit you name it.  first as you know and should have done. you always work a horse in a new saddle from the ground to make sure the fit is right. if the saddle was hurting her and then you got back on and rode anyway she could be nervous about that.  your lucky you only got bumped and bruised which is actually the norm for getting bucked off. i broke my back years ago. spent months in the hospital. and many more in rehab. i was working a young horse and the buck wasnt even hard. it was a little hop followed by a stumble that rolled him over nose first. folded me right in half.  my back will never be the same but i still ride. still train. still lovein horses

  3. I have had an experience kind of like this. I'm 13 yrs old and tiny...65 lbs. Well the horse that I was riding was new to me. The owners of this horse were average weight and they rode saddled. Then the owners told me to get on him and ride him around using a bareback pad. Well because he is used to a heavier load he didn't think that he was being ridden so he started going all crazy by running and bucking and rearing until I finally fell off. Well I slid off of his neck. Then I got tangled in his legs...so then once i got out of his legs unlike most horses who stay by their rider he took off as fast as he could run...we caught him and I got back on and showed him that I was there and circled him around a few times. Yeah we pretty much had to re-teach her everything because he hadn't been ridden bare back before...so its not exactly like your ride but its similar.

  4. i ride rough stock so i have been bucked off but you did good by getting back up you cowboy up lol.i would say i would be good if you put the saddle on her in the round pen then luong her to get the energy out make and shure that saddle fits well so she wont buck when she is not confy good luck.

  5. sounds like your saddle dont fit. I got thrown when a halflinger gelding starting bucking and jumping forward... It was horrible but he wasn't used in over a month and I had a lesson with him. Hes only a w/t pony and he is really round and no withers and saddle was too small for me. and he just gave a simple buck and I was really inexperianced at the time and fell off that was like 3 years ago haven't fallen off since lol knock on wood going to ride my mare who hasn't been ridden in a while due to me in VA helping sis shes sick 2 kids and a husband who is working lots

  6. I have been training horses for over 27 years now, rode rough stock for over 15. Whatcha think? Horses are ornery contrary critters. I have been off, on, under more horses than most people have seen. I hate to say it because I do try to train my horses with out buck. But remember all horses can, so the best thing to do is ride it out. I have had many experiences like yours, it is very frustrating but the best thing to do is don't get discouraged. Just keep plugging away at her and one day everything will click. Luck and glad you only got bruises. Me?HA I have a medical record. Haha Luck

  7. Last fall I was starting a 2 year old colt. He had been a little skittish, but I had worked him through that. I had a saddle on him and was getting off and on. My sister came up to talk to me, and we stood and talked for a while. When done, I turned and started to mount the colt. I hadn't given him any warning. As I was swinging my leg over, I suddenly found myself in the air, I must have flipped over, because I landed on my back. I laid there for about a minute and then got back up. I then started to work with the colt again, mounting and un-mounting. He was fine the rest of the time. It was a stupid mistake on my part. I was a little too confident and got a hard wake up call. I didn't realize it at the time, but later in the day the pain set in and I discovered I had cracked some ribs. If you don't ever want to get hurt or injured, I guess you shouldn't have horses though.

  8. I have never gotten buck off yet. The first time I fell off was when I was 7 and I was riding my pony and my trainer was riding a race horse and all the sudden my horse kick at her horse and they flipped out and I ended off falling off and having the race come charging at me and  grabbed on the rail and I can still remember the horse coming at me It was very scary. I really haven't falling of to much my  life. But I have been around people that have. A lady at my bar  was out riding her horse and we were given wagon rides and when a load of people were coming by  she fell off in front of everyone. It was very embarrassing. I fell off one other time. I was riding my sisters horse which is an ex race horse and he get scared at anything and runs or bucks. I was on her bareback and my foot hit the wire and made a sound the horse went flying the other way while I was lending the opposite side and I fell off. I got knocked out and my back was all bruised and my head hurt for two days. I was wearing a helmet which helped a lot. that is a good thing you got back on. Most of the time i get back on exept when I am really hurt.

  9. I have never fallen off a horse =]

  10. LOLOLOL, As for everyone who knows me on here...I been bit, stomped, kicked, ran over, attacked in a stall while taking a pee......lol, kicked in the head by a foal, fallen off and pretty much everything else that can happen to a person while working and training horses for 30 years. I used to have the rankest WB gelding that I was trying to re-train and no matter what you did before getting on it was a rodeo, I swear this horse could have been a pro bucking horse for the rodeo without even having a strap. I think I got bucked off this horses more times in 3 months than i had previously my whole life, What a rank SOB...lolololol  needless to say I did not cure him of the habit.

  11. First I need to congradulate you on getting back on...that is sometime  very difficult and could ruin a horse if it thinks bucking will get himself out of work. Obviously the saddle scared her and the buck affected her confidence so you are just going to have to build her up again. If you comfort her and work on everything back to step one with her...it will end up building trust. Good luck!!

  12. i was riding an idiot of a horse who is mean and stupid. we wer trotting around a corner and i asked him 2 canter and he went cray bucking 4 no reasn. he is not my fav horse!

  13. I was bucked off my horse about 2 years ago and it was ENTIRELY my fault. Of course it was!  Actually, it was so stupid what I did I can't believe I'm sharing it on here ;-) We were working a sitting trot, long and low on the buckle. I had forgotten to zip up the pocket of my down vest (cold out to boot, so the ground was really hard). My car keys, which are a substantial bundle, bounced out of my pocket, off my leg gaining air, and then fluttered down in a big jangle with my big car key pointed outward which jabbed him right where the bucking strap would go. Yep, scared the c**p out of him. What followed was a bucking episode that would make rodeo folk proud. I actually did fine with the bucking, but then he buckled down suddenly, spun, and jumped about 15 feet the other direction. I hit the ground at the spin, my lower body going the new direction and my upper body going the old direction. Once I untwisted myself, I got back on. One of my finer moments. My back and hip still aren't the same. Everyone gets bucked off at some point or many points, whether it's a bright moment like mine or the horse; that's life with horses. Getting back on is the best thing you can do. Good for you! Now take pain reliever and take good care of yourself to heal up!

  14. i have been bucked off a few times.my last time was a couple of years ago when i was trail breaking a new  horse and someone fired up a leaf blower and my horse broke in half,i was riding on one of my vintage saddles and the sturrup strap broke so naturally i went for a flying w in the middle of his buck,i dont remember much after that but i do remember waking up still holding on to what was left of the reins(and one side still attatched to my horses bit)and my horse milling around me.i had to mount up and ride back to the ranch riding with one sturrup and dizzy for several miles.

  15. Well, I can usually survive bucking episodes no problems and have gained a reputation as one of the few people in my area to be able to stick the bucks of many horses. That means I've gotten to ride some pretty awful horses... I've only gotten bucked off twice. Once when I was about 10yr old and a lady "kindly" said I could ride her welsh pony while she was out with an injury.... What she DIDN'T tell me was that the pony had never been ridden!!!! Turned out it had only been used for driving (found that out after I tried to ride it). I got on and he was acting very upset and jittery about the  whole situation, then a large wasp stung him on the rump and that set him off. A while later I finally landed in heap after a long series of bucks.... : ) Good fun.  The other time I was working for a rancher and was told that a unbroken 3 yr mustang/thoroughbred was to be my project for the next few months... She had been mounted once and exhibited a display of rearing and bucking that had thrown a talented rodeo cowboy (that was after 3 months of long reining, groundwork and traditional introduction to the saddle and bridle. I'd seen it and was NOT looking forward to the job. I'd already made a mental note that this was one of the most althletic horses I'd seen. Could clear anything, would put her front foot on a four foot fence no worries and I'd seen the rear that probably inspired all of those horse movies... Well I worked her pretty hard in a round pen and then gradually introduced my weight. She was being quite good and we were walking around no worries for about 15 min. Then out of the blue she started bucking and twisting and acted like she belonged in a rodeo. I ended up landing in the fence. Got back on and rode her for another  hour and she was fine. My back was messed up for a month or so after that. Funny thing was that after working patiently with her we made the transition from round pen to arena to trails and although always on edge she never did anything bad with me again. Sadly she bucked off every new person to get on that hadn't gained her trust, I think she was a one person horse and never got that chance. She is now 8 and never was sellable or rideable because nobody spent time to work with her after I left...

  16. i was about 9 years old and was on a 16hd quarter horse cross who was known to buck

i was riding him bareback with only a halter in the pasture just walking and then out of no where he took off running and i had no control, the running led to bucking and after holding on for a second or two i went flying over his head and hit the ground hard.....besides the breath getting knocked out of me, i wasnt hurt which really surprised me but i was glad of that

  17. i had a refusal at a fence, my foot went foward to his shoulder and it spooked him he reared and bucked i came offinches from the fence lol

  18. yep, been bucked off plenty of times

  19. Maybe the saddle is a bad fit?  Maybe she's not scared, but in pain.  When I'm in pain I don't pay attention very well.

  20. Yep, been bucked off a lot.  Glad you weren't hurt (badly).

A horse only has a memory span of 3 seconds, so getting back on was good, but she surely had no idea why you were punishing her, which could make her even more upset about the new saddle.

Do some groundwork until she gets used to the new saddle.  Until she settles down and feels comfortable, don't get back on.  There's no reason to get hurt and to get yourself and your horse upset.  Let her move around with it on, and work on disengaging her hindquarters and lateral flexion...that should help with the bucking.

  21. I actually just fell off the other night, i was riding, and the horse got spooked, and he went one way and i went the other, of course you should always get back on, and kudos to you doing that.

I was bucked off once, and it wasn't for any other reason then the fact that I was working a horse for a friend while she was out of town like she asked, and she didn't tell me that the horse liked to put it's head down and buck in the canter.  It scared me more than the horse, but got back on and did it from square one, she learned to be more respectful since I started out slow again, and she didn't do it to me or her owner anymore.

I think if you take time and show your horse that everything will be okay, and just take is slow with her you will be able to get her doing the things you did with her before, and your bond will be a lot stronger.  Great things take time, but you are on the right track to success with your horse.  And if you take your time, your horse will thank you for it by excellent behavior.

    Good luck!
