Question:

Have you ever been embarrassed?

Today in class we had to talk about one of our hobbies. The thing I mentioned (working out) seemed perfectly fine to me because that's what I like to do. However when I said that the whole class laughed at me and I got embarrassed. I just laughed it off with them but I was wondering why I felt kind of shameful afterwards. Also, has something like this ever happened to you?

  1. are you skinny? that might be the problem

  2. Becoming embarrassed in social situations is very normal. It happens to everyone at some point in their lives.

How to counteract embarrassment is a very interesting question. The way you did it, by laughing it off, is a very good start. The real trick though is to internally *know* that the reason they are laughing at you is something not related to you ... it's just some other reason. Perhaps someone was trying to look cool and so they started the laugh, or other students wanted to feel "in" so they laughed as well.

As long as your attitude is "eh, they've got issues, poor *them*", you will find that you will get embarrassed less and less. Take the blame frame from "what's wrong with me?" to "what's wrong with them?" and you'll start feeling more confident about every situation in your life.

    Good luck.

  3. Are you obese/emaciated? That's about the only reason I could think of where they'd laugh at you for saying you like working out as a hobbie because working out is good and cool.

Don't think about it and just brush it off. It was just a class and people you hardly know anyways.

    ;-)

  4. God I get embarrassed ALL the time..it is part of life.  Like today I was at this thing with my team, and we had to tell everyone our name, what grade we are in, and something we like.  I said I liked Latin because I do...but it was kinda a loserish thing to say.
