  1. noo

    why?

  2. Whats an aeroplane?

    *Edit*

    Thank you for the explanation!

  3. I am glad you specify 'near hit'. Time and time again our newspapers say 'near miss'. If it was a near miss then it must have been a hit.

When I was learning to fly, I was just under cloud base when another light aircraft came out of the cloud just above me, going in the other direction. That was a near hit!

  4. Good question - and good spelling.

I've spent most of my life wondering about the difference between a near hit or a miss.

I vaguely recall it's as good as a mile - and must admit whenever taking airflights I'm not only wearing my seat-belt throughout, I'm always fully tanked up on Scotch - oblivious of other aircraft likely to collide with my aeroplane.

  5. .In the UK there are no hard and fast rules governing the distance between aircraft regarding a near miss, but a 1,000 feet gap horizontally or vertically is the nearest estimate.

I was once involved in a near miss about 15 years ago when I was taking this photograph of Kidwelli castle near my home in South Wales.

I was a passenger flying in a Cessna two seater at 500 feet above the castle, when a low flying RAF fighter on a low flying exercise flew between us and the castle!!

  6. no

  7. Once, at LAX.

The aeroplane (quite right too) touched down on the runway, then suddenly, with no warning,  the engines went to full power and we went back up at an angle that felt like 90 degrees !

After what seemed an eternity (was probably only 5 minutes) the pilot announced in that 'oh so calm' manner they have, that it was 'a little crowded on the ground so we decided to go round again'.

This was a United Airlines flight in early November 2001, so you can imagine everyone on board was skittish enough about flying anyway and really didn't need that happening !

All's well that ends well i guess, but not an experience I'm in a hurry to repeat or would wish on anyone else.

  8. No, but I was on a plane where somebody was smoking though
