What About You ?

Where were you when the **** went down

Where were you when you heard the sound

What did you do when you watched the news

What did you do when you saw those views

Did you sit and stare with shock and dismay

Did you scream and holler that someone must pay

Does it make you want to fight for your freedom

Does it make you want to find them and beat them

Was this what it took to make you see more clearly

Was this what it took to cherish life so dearly

Why is it now that you’re ranting and raving

Why is it now that you’re so flag waving

Maybe now you’ll voice yourself loudly

Maybe now you’ll stand up more proudly

Don’t wait for it to happen to you

Don’t wait for it to be red white and blue

Now is the time to show what you’re made of

Now is the time nothing to be afraid of

You don’t have to die there at ground zero

You don’t have to bleed to be a hero

America’s my home it’s where I belong

America’s my home be it right or wrong

I’m glad to be here proud to believe

I’m glad to be here if you’re not then leave

  1. So your saying America is better than Canada?

  2. Sadly, I fear some have reached a state of apathetic proportion.

They moan and groan over certain conditions...yet they remain stagnant and effect no change.

My country, right or wrong...but I do, in my fragile way, try to change some things.

  3. I hear you.  I may not like what is going on or my government, but I do love my country and support our troops.  What bothers me is that many talk trash about us until they need us.

  4. Very interesting for me as an Englishman to see an American berating his countrymen for not being patriotic enough whilst the prevalent impression here is that Americans are extremely patriotic and it is OUR country that needs to wake up before we live in Britainistan. Meanwhile the Middle Eastern countries berate all of us for being anti muslim/arab/jew/black/non-white/foreigne...

Reminds me of the joke about two philosophers arguing across an alleyway from facing houses. They'll never agree because they are arguing from different premises.

I just try to be nice to the people around me and live without making a mess of my own part of the world.  And I try to think for myself.

Oh, I spent time in Canada in the 80's. I thought it a beautiful country with warm friendly people.

  5. Very nice, very nice indeed.  I agree, one does not have to be happy about some politicians, or some things America has done in the past, but we are a shinning beacon of hope for much of the world.  We can work together to make America better.  But if we are not happy to be here, then we should leave.

America is my country and I am proud of her.

  6. Yes, even though the country I live in today is not the USA of my youth, I still believe there is none better...except maybe Belize, where nobody has to work, or is that Brunei?

  7. This is still where I want to be. We should all work to make things better. Running away is never a solution.

  8. Um, yes, I've been to Canada several times. I've also been to Ground Zero; I live in New York. What are you getting at?

  9. Um, duh, I live there.

  10. This Great Experiment continues to be the Beacon...Our Founders were wise enough to believe they did not have all the answers, so left us wiggle room and the means to develop and grow.  The freedom to publicly perform self-examination.  What a grand idea...even with talking heads

    trying to clarify while confusing.

  11. what?

  12. I've read this before and love it just as much the second time around.

God Bless our troops, past, present and future and God Bless America!

  13. Draft dodging and desertion - is the only correlation - that comes to mind - with the connection of Canada, the USA and patriotism.  An estimated 20,000 Americans went to Canada to escape the Vietnam-era draft and 12,000 other service members deserted to Canada. No more than 200 American deserters from the Iraq war are now in Canada.♥

  14. what was the censored word, i completely don't understand

Ohh, i know what it is!!!! that if you're not proud of your country, leave to another one

  15. I ain't leaving...made of tougher grist than grieving...ah, but heroes do reside at 'ground zero', and live...'ground zero' is the good center of this poem...spreading outward, outward, outward...
