Do you consider it unsafe or did you stay on your resort like many people here are encouraging visitors to do.

ADVICE:**the Jamaican experience cannot be fully had on an all-inclusive resort, that perhaps just feels like any resort anywhere in the world. If you intend to stay on the resort go to some holiday destination in your own country. Why bother with Jamaica?**

  1. Nope. I hate touristy places. I grew up in one (south Florida) and could go to Jamaica on a weekend if I wanted to -- and I never wanted to.

  2. Yes I have been to Jamaica. I went at Christmas last year and stayed for two weeks. My husband and I stayed in Maypen. We stayed with his sister. I got to go to Dunn River Falls and places as such. I saw alot of Americans at those places and felt like a tourist. When I was away from those places, I felt like I was part of Jamaica. All the resorts tell you to do not go outside of the resort because it is unsafe to do so. You will find crime and dishonest people in any country, I do not even sit outside after dark on my own street.

Jamaica is very nice. I am actually going back in August, ny myself without my husband. I feel totally safe. I just know what to do.

    Hope I have helped you.

  3. Yes I've been, kinda born there. If you don't care to see all of Jamiaca then why go. If you want to know it all stay wherever just make sure you see it all. It's truly BEAUTYful.

  4. You are so right!

Its as safe/unsafe as any other country.

In any country you are visiting you should be careful...carrying your purse, do not display alot of  money in public, do not swim alone, do not go out alone at night, never get too drunk, watch your drink in night clubs.

Be aware of what is  going on around you, and in crowds know where your purse is at all times.

Jamaicans a naturally friendly, but until you know who you are dealing with do not be alone with a stranger.

(Even if you are Stella and want to get your groove on, be careful!)

  5. Yes, many times. Never stayed in a resort. I prefer staying at guest houses or little rooms on the beach. I do not consider it unsafe. I feel very comfortable there and have had great times hanging out with Jamaicans. I started taking my son there when he was about six years old after I had been several times. He also really likes it there. He is now almost 16 and visiting Jamaica is something we really enjoy doing together. Jah Bless:)

  6. Yes i have been, unless you are going to Kingston town, it is very safe, most of the people earn next to nothing, so if you can get chatting to a member of staff, they will have a brother or father, who will pick you up in the resort and take you to all the places of interest, for a few dollars, they will take you to the best places , not on the resorts itinerary, they will make sure you are safe, as they want to earn some money.

  7. I stayed at the Kingston Hilton.  Everyday we would walk to the many fast food restaurants nearby.  It was very safe, and the best trip I've ever been on.

  8. I have been to Jamaica before to visit my family but I don't think it's unsafe!

    =]

  9. i have and i will be going back this year for my second visit, i think it is a pretty country but still u always have to be careful where you especially if you are not from there.

  10. I have been to Jamaica. . .twice, and I LOVE it there.  The first time I went as a college student on a study abroad trip.  I (along with three other girls) were working at St. John's Basic School in Hannah Town (Jamaicans know about Hannah Town), we stayed up in a mission home in Meadowbrook that had a few rooms, and someone that cooked native food for us for breakfast and dinner.  I LOVED being there and being with the people.  We rode public transportation down to Hannah Town every day.  I found the people to be incredibly kind, friendly and always willing to chat or help us get around.  In Hannah Town, one of the girls helped teach classes at the community college across the street from the basic school, and the boys from the college would accompany us to get patties and juice for lunch every day because they said it was not safe.  We always felt safe, even though we stood out, being some of the only whites downtown.

I went back to Jamaica a few years later for my honeymoon, and we went to Mo Bay and Negril.  I still liked it. . .we stayed at a more 'local' hotel, rather than a major resort-- I don't like those places.  It was not nearly as wonderful as it was the first time I went.  I loved Kingston and being with the people.  The PEOPLE of Jamaica make it the incredible place that it is.

It's been 14 years since the first time I was there, and 11 since the last time I was there, so it's been a while, but I always felt safe there.  I felt the safest in the places that were supposed to be the 'most dangerous' (Hannah Town, Downtown Kingston, etc.).

  11. When I have friends from the states and other islands come to JA they stay at hotels  but in Kingston to experience Kingston's nightlife and happenings. That although "hotel like is still a far cry from resort life. Resort life although nice is like living in a bubble, you are given all of these great things confined to a compound. Don't get me wrong , I have stayed at hotels in St. Ann based on the fact I am from town and I went for the weekend, otherwise I would not bother.

The beauty of Jamaica can not be experienced via tourist attractions and off shore excursions. Jamaica has so much to offer that if one limits their experience to a resort they have not even seen a 1/4 of what Jamaica is.

  12. Ahhhhh No! I can't and don't fly.....May friends who have visited Jamaica said If I were to go I would never come home............Blessings Yahoo
