  1. I have been to Punta del Este and the Litoral on the River.

Punta del Este is a modern beach town with lots of restaurants and nightlife, nothing too different from the similar types of place elsewehere in the world.

The litoral I rode my bike from Colonia to the Brazil border (Bairro do Quai).  This is spectacular froma cultural standpoint.  Small towns and cities occur every 20-30 miles. The landscape is mostly farmland and rolling little hills (quite small even from the standpoint of someone biking).  The charm lies in the fact that these towns and cities have no chain stores or restaurants, no suburban tract housing, they have local shops and restaurants run by local people. The local people are innocent, a bit naive about the outside, modern world and honest.  Kids ride around bikes and play in packs in the town, they don't sit on a couch and play video games all day.  They don't need play dates, no one worries about the ubiquitous s*x offenders about to kidnap their children.  Simply put, it is like stepping back in time over 50 years.  If you watched 50's era tv shows like Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best and shows like that you will know what to expect.  this type of atmosphere is long gone in the rest of the world, Uruguay is the only place I have seen that is still like that.  Go now before that changes forever.

  2. Yes and I loved it! I went to Uruguay during my study abroad in college to Argentina. My study abroad program took us on different excursions and we went to Colonia, Uruguay for the weekend and it was amazing. All the streets are cobblestone and it was beutiful. Seeing the sun set right over the water with the view of Buenos Aires in the background-AMAZING. The people have an accent a lot like those of Buenos Aires because Colonia is so close. You can get there on a fast boat in 45 mins from Buenos Aires. There is also a slower boat that takes a couple hours I think but either way we were there before we knew it and although there wasn't a ton to do it was beautiful. We did rent motorbikes and party on the beach and stuff. I would like to go there again someday.
