  3. When I was a kid, the baggage depot of the old Southern Pacific station in Menlo Park, California had been converted to a model railroad museum...

  4. There is one in Liberal Kansas. They turned a Rock Island Line Depot into a museum.

  5. Yes, I have been to the Great Western Society Museum at Didcot, Oxfordshire, England.

Until the mid-1960's it was a steam locomotive depot but became redundant when steam ended on the Western Region of British Rail in 1966.

It was taken over by the Great Western Society and is now a working museum with a collection of (mainly) steam locos, some in working order, others pending restoration.

The museum still has a connection with the main network and a few of the working engines are cleared for running on the main line, which means they are available for enthusiasts' special excursions.

A smaller museum based in an old, Victorian Goods Shed, well worth a visit if you happen to find yourself in the Forest of Dean, England: The Coleford Great Western Railway Museum.

York and Swindon Museums are also based in old railway sheds.

See link below for more info:

  6. Yes, Swindon works was fairly large and one of the buildings is now a shopping centre, complete with steam engine in the food court and various other remnants around, and another building now houses the museum proper.

Not forgetting the most famous, York Railway Museum. Free entry, dozens of engines from the UK and around the world, and thousands of other items of interest, including a video link to the signaller(dispatcher) screens at York IECC. Well worth a visit.
