I have an appaloosa mare who is 13 I have had her for a year. Why I ask is because I care about her so much and today I was thinkin about how much I loved her and its scary.. I love to complane about how bad she is but at the same time thats what I love about her.. Then I was thinking what happens when she gets older and I have to make the deiction to put her down. Then I started to get scared and I kept thinking well if i care this much now what happens 5-10 years later? Just amanging how much I would love her.

  1. You have a strong bond with her that is unseparable.

  2. I feel the same way about my Paint mare -I've had her since she was a green broke two year old and now she's five and showing and trail riding and is the best horse I could have asked for.

I just try to appreciate her every day and make the most of every experience we have. i know I'll have her for a long time, which I'm sure you will yours too and thinking about the future and them not being there is sad and scary. But remember to enjoy your time with her and know you have LOTS of good years ahead.

If she's acting off, just watch her - sometimes they have moods too.

  3. Just try to learn to live in the present. For right now, today is all we have whether we be human or animal. Don't allow the fear of losing her to consume you so much you don't appreciate her on a day-by-day basis. None of us are promised tomorrow.

  4. I've had the same thoughts about my paint gelding. He's my baby and I'm mainly the only person he likes and I've thought about those things too but then I think why not just enjoy the time I have with him. Sure he's a pain in the butt but I love his attitude and I'm just looking forward to every moment that I get to spend with him. With everything your thinking about just tell yourself to not worry and just enjoy haveing your own horse. You'll cross that bridge when you get there.

  5. One of the hardest parts of having horses in our lives is knowing that they do not live as long as people. Our equine friends leave us all too soon. However, a thirteen year old should still have lots of years left, especially if you care for her well, so you have lots of time to be with your friend. Also remember that you may not ever have to make that decision. Sometimes God or Nature or the Universe takes them so quickly that you don't have to make the call.

So, treat her well, have fun with her, and make all the memories good ones. You might want to keep a journal about your horse, take a lot of video, and a lot of pictures.

I lost my Arab gelding that I grew up with about three years ago. I still miss him so much. He was my best friend though thick and thin - even when he was bad and made me so mad. All the photos and videos are more precious to me than gold now.

  6. Oh every one cares and becomes very attached to their pet, that is normal. But when that time comes, tell yourself, that since you care about her so much you would want to put her to peace, and put her down. She will be peaceful don't worry. It's not scary how much you care about her, it is great that you care about her, putting her to rest would be the best thing for her when that time comes
