Have you ever dialed the number 555-5555?

what happens its always what they use in the movies is it no number?

I have never tried this but mainly because this number is part of an American phone number.  I do not live in America and do not wish to incur large phone charges by making long-distance phone calls.

My understanding is though that these numbers are made up by movie / tv companies.  If they used a real number then people might actually phone it and bother someone with unwanted phone calls.

It doesn't exist and like the others said, it's to keep people from tying up the phone lines needlessly, cause let's face it, as a group we have some goofy individuals amongst us. I used to dial 1-800-555-1212 to get any company with a toll free number's listing. I don't know if it still works, but that's as close as you'll get to an answer dialing 555. Good luck.

The movie industry said they use it because "some people" might try calling the fake business they see in the movie, so they use it, no I've never tried it, besides that it would have to have an area code.  That way the business doesn't get prank calls.
