Ghosts are every where and you don't have to be in a haunted house to communicate with them. Most people go to the light when they die but sometimes when people die tragically they tend to linger on with there unresolved issues. Your relatives probably are not still lingering around unless they refused to go to the light. All you need for equipment on a ghost hunt is a digital camera, voice recorder and EMF detector. Any other equipment is just a bonus. Try watching ghost hunters to learn how to use them properly.

The problem with the compass is that it is nearly impossible to tell the difference between a yes and no answer. It is only good for detecting strange magnetic anomaly's, which might suggest paranormal activity. Try this: Set a compass on a sturdy table or even the floor. Use something to mark the surface where magnetic north points. Try asking aloud questions to any potential spirits. If you notice the compass needle start to deviate from your mark then your picking up a anomalous magnetic field possibly caused by a spirit entity. In many cases when this happens you'll notice the needle spike abruptly or it will even start to spin around. Ask the spirit to move the needle on no answers and to leave the needle stationary for yes answers. You might be surprised how well this can work.

Generally the needle will be too erratic to get a decisive answer that way. However if the entity is strong enough that may work. I think it's at least worth a try. Let me know if you have any success with that method.

Ghosts can not be summoned from a distance greater then the sound of your voice. However it is common for people to be followed by spirits. Many of us have spirits with us all the time but we are not usually aware of them. I've heard of people asking spirits to summon other spirits. This may be possible but i have no expierence to back that up. Infrared thermometers can be very problematic because it is hard to get a localized reading which makes it difficult to track cold spots. I suggest a digital hand held thermometer that has a rapid refresh rate. This way you can pinpoint and track cold spots on the fly.

If you are able to make contact with a spirit then simply try asking for their help. Be careful though because spirits can and do lie and never do they know the future. Remember that spirits linger for a reason and are going against the natural proccess of entering the light, which is a term that reffers to re-merging with the greater spirit energy mass that envelops the Earth. Once this has occured then you can no longer communicate with that spirit. This may not be the answer your looking for, but for your relatives sake, I hope they have moved on. If they have not moved on and they have something they wish to tell you, then it sould not be too hard to make contact. This relative may even be following you. You can't know for sure unless you try!

i used a Winchester Model 70 in .375 H&H Magnum (the powerful cartridge is required for killing beings from the next life), my map of the area, and a flashlight. when i first witnessed the apparition i was rather intimidated, but i hadn't come all that way to get home empty handed and was going to take my shot. it was roughly 70 yards away and i put the round center of mass, and the abomination fell to the ground. it is now mounted on my wall in the living room and makes a great conversation piece.

I used a .22 rifle but I think the scope was broken 'cos I didn't bag a single one.

I can't say too much about it until after the court case with the insurance company who won't pay out 'cos they won't admit that the damage to the house was accidentally caused during the eradication of vermin,

I have never done that. I don't think that would be the thing to do. that is unless you don't have an emf meter.

If being dead means hanging around the same old places, it'd be pretty much a waste of time. Why do some people believe that the dead hang around? If the whole sum result of your life is make noises in the kitchen or give people a chill it would pointless. Profoundly, unbearably pointless...

This one time I was just minding my own ghostly business in this guys house when suddenly i was shot by a massive bullet from out of nowhere.  He thought I was dead but I wasn't and now the jerk has me mounted on his wall stuck forever.
