and what type of results did you get?

i heard about cutting shells being used by some police. so i tried it. took a razor and cut the shell just a little perforating, through the plastic at about where the base of the wad is, all the way around. put the shell into my single shot ender's royal, (slightly modified, lol) 12 guage cannon. and fired it a an old toilet sitting about 30 yards away in the weeds. the basin took the hit and was completely destroyed!

  1. an unmodified shotgun shell would have done the same thing.

    Whats your point?

You mall ninjas need to talk to some sportsmen and police officers now and then...at least read "Guns and Ammo" before you put an eye out.

  2. I'm not sure what that is supposed to accomplish?  If you're going to use the shell right away it shouldn't affect anything except maybe get stuck during extracting as the plastic may disintegrate within the shotgun causing problem.  For sure in a tubular magazine the shell could break and make the shotgun jam.  As for cutting shotgun shell to use later, that is a bad idea.  This will make them more susceptible to the weather (humidity) and turn them into duds.  Shell life is not nearly as long for shotgun shells as it is for brass/nickel casing ammo anyway.

  3. So whats the thinking behind this? That the shell will fly off with the load still inside.. not happening. If you want one big hole.. buy slugs.

  4. Yes we used to do this once and while, we called them necked- offs or the poormans slug. It's not very smart but neither were we 40yrs ago.

  5. no but i have heard of it being done.was anyone sitting on the toilet when you shot it?

  6. Never did it, but the old timers called it ringing a shotgun shell. The purpose of it I was told, was to keep all the shot together, making it more deadlier by doing so.It would almost be like a slug hitting something when fired at up close. A tale needs to be told here. when my great Grandmother was living in a one room house that was not finished. The doors and the windows were just covered by curtains. Her husband was off working and she had a baby that had the colic, and was crying a lot- this was during the high water time of year when  all the animals from the swamps had to migrate to the hills until the water went down. That night every time the baby would start crying, a panther would scream just out side the house. I guess he thought that it was something wounded that he could eat. She had no means of defense except a single shot shot gun and some fine shot. She said she rung a couple of shells and waited till the panther got close to see him in the dark. She shot the panther about 15 steps from the front door. She said it almost took his head off. A true tale! The cat, if from the west, would be called a cougar- in the swamps, they are known as panthers. So I guess ringing a shell had a use at one time in the past.

  7. no have you ever heard the saying safety first. Something you should look into.

  8. I don't understand how that would help. A 12 gauge should destroy a toilet anyway. If you have another spare toilet in the weeds shoot it without cutting the shell, and you should get the same effect.

  9. I used to do this with my old H&R Topper when I was young and dumb.  They acted like a slug at close range.  Would be ok in an emergency but I wouldn't make a habit of it.  I shudder to think of what kind of pressures it's creating.
