  1. the sun sets due west of you (or anyone else) on the equinoxes. In summer it rises north of this, and in winter to the south.  if Lake Erie is due west of you, then the sun will generally set over the lake, as it does here in Buffalo ever day of the year.

The sun doesn't even follow the equator anyways, it follow the ecliptic which is 23.5deg off from the equator (earth tilt).

  2. Depending where you are on the coast of lake Erie, not all the lake is to the north of you.  If you're IN the city of Erie, for example, most of the lake is actually WEST of you, and at least half of it is SOUTH of your latitude.  Even in Cleveland, some of the lake is west and south of you.  Just enter "erie" on google maps, you'll see.

The sun sets in the west.  The position of the equator has nothing to do with it.
