Bone marrow biopsy? Did it hurt? What did they do? Was there tons of pain?

  1. Unfortunately this is can be a painful procedure, but they dope you up pretty well before hand. Done with biopsy needle. You will be OK


  2. You will most likely be lieing on your stomach.  They take the sample from the hip bone.  Unless you are a small child, you will be awake.  I wont let them do it without giving me ativan, but I know some people who do it with no meds.

    They will numb the area with lidocaine and it will sting.  Then they take the liquid marrow sample.  Yes, it hurts a LOT.  But, it will only last about 30 seconds.  Then they will chip a peice of bone off, which can hurt, but I generally feel more pressure on that.

    If the person knows what they are doing the whole proceedure from start to finish takes about 10 mins.

    You will be sore for a couple days, but nothing major.

    Do NOT let a student perform the proceedure.  I have done that, never will again.
