Have you ever had this wine before?

I bought a 2001 J. Lohr Paso Robles Merlot. I usually drink Cabernet, but I thought I'd give this Merlot a try. My question is since I am used to drinking 2005 Cab, should I pop open this Merlot and drink as is, or do I need to put it in a decanter and let it breathe for a while? Or, do I just not open it for a while? I can't find any info on this wine - it was not expensive by any means, but I would like to enjoy it now if I can.

  1. Here's what I do > reds are usually served at 60° F,  I open & pour about 2 fingers full into a wine glass, & let the bottle decant while I have a first taste.  If all is well, after about 10-15 minutes, I'll pour 3-4 fingers.  If the wine isn't quite ready, I move onto a different bottle.

    J. Lohr is a very nice California wine & I've been very pleased with both the reds & whites.

  2. Since merlot is pretty much the "mixer" for the other wines, I'd just pop it  and drink it.

  3. I suggest opening it, leave it in the bottle for 15-20 minutes before you pour. Most merlot made here needs little aging, its meant to be drank young.
