  1. nope sorry...

i know hitler killed gypsies along with the jews during the holocaust...so apparentally they did exist?

  2. yeah

  3. We don't call them gypsies here in south Germany, that would be politically incorrect. Instead, they're called the "Sinti and Roma", and, yes, there is a gypsy population here, a slight minority, who have all settled down, which makes me consider ria's question: Can a gypsy who's settled down actually be called a gypsy? In my German way of thinking, I'd say yes, as we have the right of descent ("ius nascendi" in Latin): Everybody born from German ancestors is rightfully a German, so anybody of Sinti or Roma descent could be rightfully called a gypsy.

Don't get me wrong, German gypsies have a German passport and all, and are German citizens as well as everybody else. There's much more discrimination against gypsies going on in Eastern European countries, like in the Czech Republic or Romania. Post-WWII-Germany has done a lot to avoid that, which included granting the Sinti and Roma German citizenship if they settled in Germany.

I don't deny Hitler's crimes against the gypsies, but I think we've overcome that. After all, the "thousand year Reich" lasted for a humble twelve years. Enough for a mass murderer to carry out his plans, you might say. But Germany has turned into a multicultural society since then. To quote the (g*y) mayor of Berlin, Herrn Wowereit:

    "Und das ist gut so!"

@katze, oh, Hessen. They still have the death penalty in their constitution, don't they? I don't agree with everything the Bavarian government does, but we have environmental protection and childrens' rights in our constitution. As a matter of fact, Bavaria was the first German state to prohibit parents BY LAW to beat their children. It only became a federal law after we had introduced it.

  4. Gypsies camp out sometimes in the town where I live, in Hessen.  They are non German speaking though.   They also p**p everywhere at the edges of their campsites.  It's really disgusting.  I'm sure they must have toilets in their trailers, so I don't know why they do that.

  5. Alwin gave a perfect and complete answer .I coldn't have done better.

  6. Gypsies are known to be traveling people so it is hard to say where they are from or belong to.

But yes, I heard from Gypsies who settled down in a southern part of Germany. Which leads to another question: are gypsies who do not travel around any more still gypsies?
