When I was in the Philippines last year I fell in love with a street snack. The locals called it Mer-Roo-Ya, and it was a sweet, fried patty made of bananas and some sort of syrup. It was sooo good! What is the proper spelling of this treat, and does anyone have a recipe?

BTW - I also had fried plantains, and the merooya was definitely different than this :)

  1. It is saging (banana) maruya

    Mah - Ru - Ya

You can also use sweet potato instead of banana. Just deep fry the bananas or sweet potatoes and sprinkle with brown sugar until golden brown or when sugars turn to caramel.

  2. I suggest getting the bigger bananas than regular ones. That are mostly sold in asian markets. Sweet potatoes are good as well.

  3. No but the above explanation sounds good to me

  4. It's called Maruya. It's easy to make too.
