Question:

Have you ever heard of this? It was new to me, and very good for the environment?

My husband got permission to take some trees (that needed to be cut down to help with drainage during a flash flood) and repant the tree without the roots in an area where they would be able to live and help the environment. He and some people, including teenagers, dug holes with a large posthole digger that you crank like a bit and brace, (I found it at a second hand store for $5.00)

They had to dig down to the water table (along the park next to a creek) and plant the trees , that had been recut at an angle to help them absorb water better.

It will be interesting to see if they will grow. He read about it somewhere.

I thought it was a great idea, except they did it on Mother's Day.

I told him well, I should have known you would spend this day with your mother (Mother Nature). I couldn;t help because I am not well enough, so I wish he had picked another day, but I am glad he did it

Has anyone else tried this technique before?

  1. i think thats a great idea. another idea that i was thinking about, was having a water-balloon fight at a local park. cause there are times when the grass isnt watered (due to lack of rain or cost too much to use water) . and with a water balloon fight , not only are you having fun, your also  watering the grass.

  2. I don't think it'll work because a tree is just too big. It's like taking broccoli, cutting off it's roots, and expecting it to grow.

What may work though if it's stable and dies down is to just put a vine on it, the vine will grow through the tree, making it look perfectly alive.

  3. No, that does sound very interesting, and very good.

  4. yes it's just like Christmas time when you purchase your christmastree and they cut alittle off the bottom at an angle ,it does help the tree in absorbing water for better hydration....

  5. Not with trees but with certain types of houseplants.  I know with other plants it only works on certain varieties.... but knowing this..... the are a couple of problem trees in our yard the when we take them down we can at least TRY to re-locate... thanks for the info..

one more thing.... just what kind of trees did you relocate?

  6. did your husband get this advice from an expert i dont think trees can grow with out any roots to give them a start but it worth checking in to

  7. Never heard of this, find a hard time believing that it works, especially with trees, as a tree requires a healthy root system to grow properly.  You can propagate some vines like this, but I doubt it works wit trees.

  8. Doubtful that the trees will be able to develop any roots.  It might work with a cutting from the branch of certain trees.  Sounds like he wasted his time.
