Have you ever heard "An Ode to Spot"?

From Star Trek TNG...Data to his cat Spot.

(in honor of all the cat poems today...a major fave of mine)

Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature,

An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature;

Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses

Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your sub-vocal oscillations,

A singular development of cat communications

That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection

For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents,

You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.

And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion

It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

Oh Spot, the complex levels of behavior you display

Connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array;

And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,

I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

  1. I have actually heard this poem.  This illustrates the difference between a poem composed by a computer and one composed by a Human Being, real or virtual.

  2. Nope, never heard it.  But, can picture Data reciting this.  BTW, he was my favorite character.

  3. I had skimmed over the Data reference - and was absolutely blown away by your erudition.....only to find that it wasn't written by you!  I love this.  Can we all have a go at turning a simple nursery rhyme or something into an ode by Data?  I am going off now to see what I can do.

  4. It's bad enough

    another poem about a cat

    furry, fuzzy, feline thing

    but to have to resort

to read, it seems, every word

    with dictionary....

I'm off to see Spot the dog!

    Maybe that ode contains

words less than finger counts!   lol

  5. Ofttimes I engage in reflexive interrogatory contemplation and aver, declare, and assert, "Now this is the manner desirable for all sapient individuals engaged in oral or literary interchange. Youse is my kind of gal!

  6. Saw that episode.

Here's a little ditty my dad is fond of reciting.  *ahem*

    Three decrepid rodents

    Three decrepid rodents.

    Observe how they motivate

    Observe how they motivate.

They all persued the agriculturalist's spouse,

She decapitated their tails with a Connecticut cleaver.

Have you ever observed such a monstrosity in your life as

    Three decrepid rodents.

Don't know the original author, dad and his fraternity brothers, I suspect are the culprits.

Thanks again for all the poedification.

  7. Live long and purr-sper...

    D!

  8. Ironic that Data did not consider Spot to be sentient. Cats are one of the most perceptive creatures I know. Their whole world is controlled by their senses. Maybe because he might have considered them unfeeling? Just because he thought Spot may not understand - does not disprove being sentient.  Well, maybe Y/A does display that!! ♥

  9. Nope
