yes. me and my husband packed a small sports bag each , and with passports and money went to heathrow airport to find a flight to america. we got one for the next morning. we slept on a bench then flew to california. arriving at la airport at midnight was a  pain but we found a motel. then we went backpacking, staying in youth hostels for 3 months. sometimes travelling overnight on greyhound buses to save hotel costs. we loved it. we went from la to san fransisco, san diego, las vegas back to la then down to new orleans .somewhere along the trip we found tombstone arizona. i would not have missed a second of it. and we went to mexico too. it was astounding. we got back with  just enough money for the bus back home. not bad eh? no regrets at all. if you are thinking of doing it ,go for it.  and enjoy
