  1. I drive a truck and keep spare keys for everything Velcroed up under the edge of the box.  They've saved me many a time.  But hiding a key somewhere on a sedan type car can be tricky.

  2. Yes I have but I always keep a spare key in a place that I cant tell you..............................

  3. have locked my keys in my car a couple of times...one time I used an old wire hanger and squeezed it through the window and unlocked it puling up the lock...much harder to do these days; another time had to call AAA and they used a jimmy to open the door; another time had to call a locksmith to jimmy the door; now I carry a spare in my wallet...no worries!

  4. Yes, and yes.  And considering that VW had it situated such that you could not lock your driver's door unless you did it with a key, it amuses me that I had the key in the ignition, the engine running, and I locked the car up solid.  I did it by closing the driver's door and reaching in to the lock by opening the back door, which COULD be locked from the outside.  And, yours truly did just that, all because my back door, for some reason I cannot remember now, had to be the last door shut if I wanted to lock the car up.  AND, I actually had a second set of keys which I had taken out of my pocket that morning and laid in the passenger front seat!!  And it was a diesel VW of 1981 vintage, and it had almost a full tank of diesel, which could have kept the car running for a day or so before it ran out of fuel, so, I had to break the vent window, or, "the triangle" window on the passenger front side, to open that door, to get in and turn the car off and  unlock the rest of the car.  It was a pain in the backside, as  you can imagine, and is showed just what a "genius" I was to achieve that.  God Bless you.

  5. I have locked my keys in every car I have owned. But now, I have a vehicle I can get into without busting a window or damaging the door guts trying to get it open.

Here's my advice, MAKE EXTRA KEYS, and either give them to someone who you can trust. Preferably the person you would call for help.

I have never had to break a window, in fact, I have become such an expert at getting in, that friends call me to help them get into their cars.

  6. Waiting for a friend one night who was running late and I was not comfortable in the neighborhood I was waiting in....finally she showed up, and in my haste I jumped out of my car and hit the lock button on my way out...leaving my car running, radio on, etc.  She and I were standing there trying to figure out what to do when a cruiser came by and stopped (this was not an area where two women should be standing around at night).  WE told them what happened and just then a group of teenagers came walking up on the other side of the street.  One of the cops yelled "Hey Mark - come here a minute".  The kid replied saying "I didn't do nothin'".....the cop walked across the street to talk to him and the other cop asked my friend and I to step into a doorway down the street a way with him.  Long story short....the kid got into my car in seconds!!!  (seems the cops knew him because he had been into some stuff - including stealing cars.)  The kid went on his way and caught up with his friends...and the cops said "You're all set".....and we all went on our way.  My friend and I still laugh about it...years later.

  7. my dad has locked keys in a car and had a car that was running lock itself without anyone in it. we called AAA for the running one and the stopped one we had an extra pair of keys at my dads car dealership

  8. I have Onstar. so no

  9. I would personally call a locksmith if there is no way of getting into the car.  While they aren't cheap, you wouldn't have to break the window.  If it rains or snows before you fix it you would be in a world of hurt, plus it costs money to replace the window and you would have to pay someone to install it if you don't know how.   The cheapest option would be to call a friend and have them drive you to get a spare set of keys if you have one.

    Preemptive measures:

Modern cars use RF chips in their keys, and are quite expensive to replace or get new ones, so I wouldn't recommend putting a spare key in a lock box under the car, not to mention the potential for car theft on any car model, old or new.

I also saw something you install into your car security system which allows you to knock (with your hand, like when you knock on a door, but on your rear car window) a pattern that you preprogram that will unlock your car if need be.

    Just something to look into.
