Have you ever planted a rock garden?

If you've planted a rock garden, how much did it cost you in rocks, I'm only planning on a small garden. Also, any mistakes you made that you want to share so I won't make the same one? What worked well for you? thanks

I am working on a rock garden also.  I got a bunch of large, medium and small rocks out of my pasture and also my neighbors pasture (ask around, people are happy for someone to haul off their rocks as they get in the way of the mower - or even drive around county roads or gravel roads and look on the side of the road for rocks)  bring a shovel and some strong friends.  I also just bought a load of gravel (1 cubic yard) of river rock from a sand/gravel dealer and loaded it on a trailer and brought it home for $87.  Most places also deliver and the cost is way less than buying bags at Home Depot or somewhere similar.  and the rocks are so much prettier!

For edging I went to a surplus building supplies and bought concrete edgers for $1 each which are ~1ft.  and round concrete circles for about the same price which I will use for a base for potted plants and a walkway.  I put down a few layers of good weed fabric (a closeout at Home Depot)  It is debateble whether or not this is money well spent as my experience with weed fabrics has been marginally successful.

Also before I ever started, I drew up a design on paper and thought out all the details.  You can get graph paper and make a scale drawing and know how large it will be, and where it will go and get an idea of how it will work in the space you have.  Also I would bring my digital camera with me and if I saw a nice landscape or idea I thought I might incorporate into my garden I snapped a picture of it.  I love rocks and think rock gardens are so beautiful.  I have a rock set aside I hope to make into a water feature if I can find a way to drill a hole in the center

Go to a Japanese garden center and they can help.

Check out the Buddhist center or Japanese cultural center they can suggest a good style too.
