Question:

Have you ever seen a dog able to open a door?

A dog I am watching did this twice today. I have French doors which open to my deck and they are equipped with the European-style door levers. Does it seem unusual for a dog to be able to figure this out?

  1. Nope, not at all.  I have a gate in my house where I put my hand on it and clench so that it unlocks and I can go through and my dog figured out to put her mouth on it and bite down, now the gate serves no purpose!

  2. Lots of them can figure that out. My malamute can open the refrigerator, and long ago I had a border collie that could open both a doorknob and the gate latch. I had to hasp everything at the top!

    Good luck!

  3. Yes, I've seen it! Many figure it out themselves, but some are trained to!

Get a child lock, they have them for those door levers!

  4. dogs are very smart. they can figure that out very easilyy

  5. yes. infact people train them to do tht to help the disabled. i actually train dogs for tht very same reason. but for a regular house trained dog to do tht, tht would be unusual unless he had some training before you bought him.

  6. nope not at all.Tilks Mom

  7. Had a white German Shepard named "Bullet" about twenty years ago that would grab the k**b in his teeth and turn it, then pull the door right open. Ruined a few doorknobs

  8. yes my dog opens our sliding screen door al the time only to come inside though never to go out ;-)

  9. no I have seen this done

you  must remember that they can train service dogs do all sorts of things- they can even answer a phone

  10. Its unusual for those who don't own dogs/know about service dogs. however, animal assisted ____(fill in the blank) is a growing subject today. Ive done an internship where we trained dogs how to do normal household things (putting laundry into the basket/washing machine, opening doors, turning on and off switches, andtaking out garbage.) they are smart little creatures ;)

  11. no, both my pits can do it.

  12. Not at all. They can open doors, window's, refrigerators, cupboards and more.

  13. Paws for caws teach it everyday

  14. It's unfortunate when they figure it out because they never forget and it can be a pain in the butt. It didn't take my german shepherd long and there was soon no keeping him in if I wasn't with him.

The only thing you can really do about it is lock the doors or put a bungee closure on the handles.

  15. My dog puts my empty beer cans in the recycle bin for me!!!

  16. Yeah, I've seen a few that know how to open doors. It's kind of weird when you think about it!

  17. nah my dog tries to open mine but then never actually pulls it open..almost tho
