Have you ever seen a elf/ball lightning before? how does it look like?

On 11/7/09 on went for a walk during a lull between thunderstorms. I saw a brilliant silvery ball about the size of a baseball about three feet off the ground. It shot up into the clouds and there was a huge clap of thunder that almost knocked me down. My grandson ran home and I stood there not believing what I saw. Was this ball-lightning?
